The protein that dials up 'good' fat production has been discovered

In a major breakthrough, scientists have identified a rather elusive protein involved in the production of ‘good’ fat, brown fat, and found it can even boost the formation of these cells in white fat. Understanding how to ‘switch on’ the creation of this type of energy-burning cell opens the door to novel weight-loss treatments that have eluded researchers to date.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is essential for producing heat from blood sugar and fat molecules, through a process called thermogenesis. It also requires a lot of energy (or calories) to fuel this. Unfortunately, by the time we reach adulthood, most of our brown fat cells have given way to white adipose tissue (WAT), which has a less efficient energy-burning system, and tends to act more as storage space for the excess calories we eat.

Elite athletes can have as little as 3% WAT throughout their body, while adults with obesity can have as much as 70% – and as such, it becomes increasingly difficult to lose weight.

But researchers at the University Hospital Bonn in Germany believe they have cracked the code that could help adults swing the pendulum back to packing more good fat, and creating ‘beige fat’, or turning the white stuff brown.

"Exercise and dieting are not enough to effectively and permanently shed the pounds," says corresponding author Alexander Pfeifer, professor and Director of the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University Hospital Bonn. "Our energy-dense foods lead to energy being stored in white fat. But losing weight isn’t that easy, as the body saves energy in response to a low-calorie diet. So our goal is to achieve additional energy release."

Yes they are but only if you make exercise and dieting part of your everyday lifestyle. Of course the weight's going to come back if you stop doing the things you did to achieve that weight loss.

And I speak from experience as someone who's been 15-20 lbs. overweight my whole life and am now at my perfect weight. How was it done? I ate less and moved more.

It takes REAL change. Most people call it “discipline” but they can only muster it for short periods of time, because it’s not discipline, it’s accepting lifestyle changes and normalizing them.

So when will the new BAT miracle pill be available? Lemme guess...never. The Big pharma players are making too much money from Type II diabetes meds.

Cynical? You betcha.

I like fluffy ladies. Nothing shows bat$hit crazy like skinny old women with eating disorders. Gross.

It would be hilarious if it turned out this protein was found mostly in bacon...

It’s not always about eating less, it’s about types of foods and quantities. Eat a huge salad or big plate of veggies is fine as long as not lots of dressing and sugary stuff, cheese or other worthless calories.

Less processed food and empty calories seems to work for me. I even have some nights I didn’t get to eat dinner till 2 hrs later than normal, half dozen times I’ve had a big amount of fried chicken I picked up on way home and still lost weight next morning and kept on losing.

Lots of people cut back too many calories and it can take longer to lose because the body starts slowing metabolism and holding onto fat stores because the body is being deprived of some nutrients or sufficient calories for basic functions.

I tend to believe the obesity epidemic began when the FDA told everyone fat was death.

This is a process inside your cells, so they will be in any aisle you walk down!

EPAC1 Enhances brown fat cell growth "In addition to brown adipocytes, another type of thermogenic adipocyte, beige cells, can be found mainly in the subcutaneous white adipose tissue (WAT). These beige adipocytes can be induced by cold exposure or pharmacologically, in a process called browning/beiging7,8."

You can induce Brown and Beige cells through cold exposure, so hang around the freezer case but do not buy any frozen dairy products!

A Supplement or drug....they are trying to figure out how to make the product you hope to find!

“I tend to believe the obesity epidemic began when the FDA told everyone fat was death.“

What’s at the bottom of the government food pyramid? Grains.

What are beef-cattle fed to fatten them for the slaughter? Grains.
