Dogs can experience depression, too — here are signs to look for and how to help

Studies have shown a dog’s brain is similar to that of a human’s, and in the 1980s, Dr. Nicholas Dodman of the School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University discovered that dogs can experience the chemical and hormonal changes that bring about depression and anxiety in humans.

Unfortunately, dogs can’t talk or communicate their inner feelings with their humans, so dog owners should be on the lookout for signs their four-legged friend is suffering from depression.

How to tell if your dog is depressed Many symptoms of canine depression could also be linked to chronic pain and poor health, so if you notice your dog has multiple symptoms, call your vet to first rule out any illness or underlying medical conditions.

Dogs can mope.

Looks at how some of them grieve when their masters pass on or they are taken away from their human family because they can’t be cared for any more.

Knew this. Also, if an owner is depressed, the dog will be as well.

Nothing a bowlful of raw beef liver can’t cure.

They can have any mental disease a human can have. Some breeds more than others. They all have their own personalities also.I have one that is a loner when it comes to other dogs, but she loves her humans. I also have a perpetual puppy, he will probably be that way his entire life. In my lifetime I have had over 20 dogs, each one different.

I remember dogs that refused to eat when their master died. Some even died of a broken heart, others starved themselves to death..

I’m a cat guy, but I grew up with dogs and I have wonderful memories of them.
Here is a beautiful movie, based on a true story, for ANY animal lover…….

I know, I know, it’s Richard Gere, but it’s a wonderful movie.

From what I hear, dogs often take on the personality of their masters.

/\

i was best man for a couple that just divorced last year after 20 years of marriage.

she 'took' the 2 dogs in a hostile break up, male and female.

ive noticed the male, when i go over to her place, is seriously depressed. he cheers up a little when i visit, but i can see it pains him to see me leave. he misses his dad ( owner) and me too since i used to spend a lot of time there too. honestly, thats the real reason i go to her house , to see that dog. guess i am a little depressed over the whole thing too. it pains me when i leave. poor pup, he thinks hes been ditched and abandoned. yup, dogs and humans ,, its a thing.

Every dog I have ever met goes utterly stupid for dried liver.

My whole family refers to it as “Puppy Crack”.
