No other nation, save the brutal dictatorships of Syria and North Korea, have recognized Russia’s claims, which is evidence enough of their illegality. 2014-2015 saw high civilian casualties. From 2019 onwards it was nearly a fifty fifty split between DPR/LPR combatants and Ukrainian combatants.
For three years straight there weren’t even 30 civilian deaths counted either by the UN/Ukraine observers or by Russia’s observers (the DNR Ombudsman in Donetsk).

What is fascinating is a video i watched where people mostly young are asked why they are not in Ukraine fighting and their answers are interesting. Again a few brave folks say they are against the war, but the rest are great and run the gamut of I’m in school, they haven’t caught me yet , or my job is too important, but my favorite is I have stuff to do in Moscow.
I am not pointing this out to say that their reasons are any different then many in Ukraine, I am pointing this out because we often hear from the usuals that Ukraine is having issues recruiting soldiers….,
I wonder, as we are often told, about how muskovite population is so much larger than Ukraines,so why does Putin have to resort to conscription and mobilization with this large population and the great support for great patriotic war 2.0
