The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We DO post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
I Agree with you on the home-grown veggies and eggs.
Beau is remodeling out barn and is adding a chicken coop for me. I’ve always had chickens, but there’s been a 5-year gap now and I’ve really missed those fresh eggs. And chicken hugs! :)
Yep. Read and commented on that the other day.
a. I’m ignoring them.
b. They’ve got to FIND me, first! :)
In other news....
We missed the storm with the tornado by about 15 miles. My folks missed it by 5. They were without power for 9 hours. No damage to their property, but their power comes from Evansville.
Drone footage of the damage: https://x.com/ChicagoMWeather/status/1756004611482103884?s=20
I had Hazelnut shrubs at my other farm - same results! We have ONE young Hickory tree on our property. It won’t bare nuts until both of us are long gone.
We’ve got more Black Walnuts than we deserve, though. The wood is extremely valuable, so I plan on harvesting a number of them for $$ when the time comes. The nuts on Black Walnut are REALLY hard to harvest, so there’s not much value in the nuts - other than to the squirrels who have pretty much planted all the trees we have, now!
I guess squirrels ARE good for something, LOL!
We were glued to the TV during that time. We got wind and rain and some hail, but no damage.
Glad you were safe in your neck of the woods! :)
My onions are up. Small and growing slow, but with this nice weather we’ve been having, I’ve been able to put them out on the porch for full day sun.
We have a bit of a cold snap Tues and Wed, but then back to sunny and 30’s after that, so hopefully, I can get back to that and not depend on the grow lights.
I also started Columbine, rosemary, and lavender, and no signs of them yet, although I do know they take a while to come up, which is why I planted them so early.
Supposed to be sunny and in the 50’s today!
WHOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!
I use buckets with the bottoms cut out or sections of old culvert pipe we replaced that mr. mm cut into sections for my potatoes.
I lay the potato pieces on the ground and cover them with wood chips. As they grow, I add more wood chips. It works great and for us, with my garden soil being somewhat soggy and dense, I get a far better crop than if I plant them in the ground.
Although I still get volunteer potatoes coming up every year where last year’s crop was. I let them go and take what I can get out of them.
I made scalloped potatoes last night for mr. mm from home grown potatoes and onions and milk from a local dairy. He said it came out fantastic.
The evil behind that is breath taking.
That they would destroy lives and kill people just to advance their agenda is demonic.
I ordered some saplings from NH State Nursery for a very good price (they are all sold out now, they went fast!) and have Red ossier dogwood bushes, White birches, sugar maples, and from the county, some shag bark hickory.
Now I need to find room for most of them. My son is getting a couple. I’m sure I’ll have some left over.
Not a productive week in any respect because ... (ta da!) I came down with the flu Wednesday morning. I cannot remember the last time some bug had me down & out in bed for 2 days, but this one did. I started getting up briefly yesterday morning & was able to stay up from about 7 pm to midnight last night - serious improvement. The bug came on fast & appears to be leaving not quite as speedily, but improvement as of yesterday afternoon has been fairly rapid. I actually felt like a cup of coffee this morning.
My best advice: do the Vitamin D “Hammer” as soon as you come down with any virus. I have used it before & my brother used it a couple of weeks ago with a nasty cold - by day 2, cold was all but gone. He now recommends it to others. I used it both times I had COVID & had 3 day experiences (full disclosure: took IVM with the first bout). I feel like my symptoms ‘resolved’ definitely in the 48 - 72 hour window.
No idea where I picked up the bug, but our state has a high level of flu right now.
So here is the “Hammer” & a link:
“A colleague of mine and I have introduced vitamin D at doses that have achieved greater than 100 nmol/L in most of our patients for the past number of years, and we now see very few patients in our clinics with the flu or influenzalike illness. In those patients who do have influenza, we have treated them with the vitamin D hammer, as coined by my colleague. This is a 1-time 50 000 IU dose of vitamin D3 or 10 000 IU 3 times daily for 2 to 3 days. The results are dramatic, with complete resolution of symptoms in 48 to 72 hours. One-time doses of vitamin D at this level have been used safely and have never been shown to be toxic.8 We urgently need a study of this intervention. The cost of vitamin D is about a penny for 1000 IU, so this treatment costs less than a dollar.”

Showers today, rainy tomorrow, heavy rain Monday ... this will keep me from being able to load up anything for our move, which is probably a good thing after the last couple of days - enforced ‘take it easy’ time. I am craving baked maccaroni & cheese for some reason & after eating very little since Wednesday, I am going to ‘indulge’ in this high carb treat ... ‘comfort’ food for sure!
Crocuses are blooming here & it looks like there may be some daffodils coming up at the new house. One of the joys of the new place is seeing what comes up & blooms & also, what some of the trees are ... we have the oaks, two chestnuts & two sycamores figured out, but there are quite a few trees we are unsure about, including 3 small fruit trees & what looks like a large apple tree. It’s exciting!
Gardening tip- open the catalogue of plants and seeds, look at all the things that look yummy, circle them, get your credit card, and order them
Then wo4k overtime to pay it all off.
Had some green beans the other night- what a difference between home grown and store bought can beans. still eating carrots, corn which is excellent in soups and stews. Did tfind the real sweet corn last year like we did in the last few years , but what we had was still plenty y good in soups. made a lamb stew last week- it was awesome.
A good time to check your box of seeds for those seeds you bought but have yet to plant! (And any seeds packaged more than 5 years ago you can wild sow on a windy day on your garden's "Fairy Island", if you have one! )
How I LONG for Spring!
Qiviut, absolutely happy for you your Mother in this new property adventure! Hope you find massive drifts of spring wild flowers shooting up all over the place!
Excellent point re: drilling drainage holes on the side of containers rather than the bottom. Another reason: invasive rootlets from nearby trees won’t be able to grow up into the container. I’ve had very good luck growing in cheap plastic totes. The lids can be redone with tulle or fine netting to keep out pests. The resulting greens are perfectly pristine — they look exactly like the idealized fotos you see in seed catalogues!
That’s when I would grow indoors. Yes, officer. Nothing but grass and weeds in the yard.
Look for poles sticking out the top of trash cans. Typically people will throw out several at a time. Akso... screw together short poles to make taller ones.
If feeling a cold or flu I also Take Quercetin and Bromulain along with the Ivrmctn, and zinc, elderberry syrup or capsules.
** Somewhere I read that using proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) — medications like esomeprazole (Nexium), omeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid,) can counteract a covid cytokine storm. (Also possibly for anaphlactic shock from bee stings AND Taken Just Before you Immediately go to the ER. (Reported by allergic to bee sting individual as their Drs' instructions.) Naturally Every one should research and make up their own minds about medical info from the internet!)
