Proverbs 1:7 says that the fear (reverence) of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but fools despise wisdom and correction.

As an agnostic let me add a thought:
The fear of divine judgement may not be the beginning of wisdom, but it is the basis of an orderly, working, and cohesive society. It makes the totalitarian police state unnecessary. I just hope America hasn't lost its moral Christian foundation.
