Smart TV brand that does not pimp their ads on the home screen?

Posted on 02/22/2024 4:15:51 AM PST by LouAvul

My Sony flat screen TV is old and is rebooting at least once a day. And the pimps at Sony have overridden my "preferences" to hawk their "woke" alerts and advertisements. All this on the home screen.

Since I'm going to upgrade anyway, is there a brand that doesn't pimp the Psuedo Cause du jour when it fires up?

Dumb tv with a Roku stick or box. It’s stripped down but will run whatever app you want.

I’d love to hear about a “dumb” TV that’s currently being sold.

Dang, you’re right. Not many dumb tvs being made anymore. I saw Insignia may make them, but I only saw a single 43” on BestBuys app. Huh. Guess it’s been a while.

“I have an old, wall-mounted Samsung 82” QLED 4K Smart UHD TV, that doesn’t.”

I have the 75” model and it doesn’t do that.

The onboard Sony "settings" allowed me to eliminate all but the "apps" row (which row is where my streaming selections are chosen), but the pimps at sony overrode that to fill it with ads. I especially hate the ads in February every year.

Sorry, but with FR's archaic software I'm unable to resize. But, here's my current screen.

I think this is what he is talking about. Cause of the day. In this case blacks.

Yeah I deactivated all I could as well but you can’t do it all.

Like I said, a $40 streaming device allows me to bypass all that.

The only time I use the Sony home screen is to access antenna channels or web browser.

Have you researched around to see if there are hidden menus on that TV that can be utilized? Roku for instance has a number of hidden menus that change up stuff like that.

I have been very happy with the LG OS - no ads, and Samsung is pretty good, as well.

I shopped Sony and when I saw a demo of the OS I decided it would drive me crazy. Too bad, the images are good - but the ads are a deal-breaker for me.

We have a Sony google TV that would do that ‘woke’ garbage, but we got a Logitech Harmony universal remote that I programmed so that when it powers on the TV, it also powers on the tuner box, and immediately sets the input to #1 (which is the tuner box). I’ve never cared for the “smart TV” concept. I use either a RasPi or a laptop running Linux connected to the TV for youtube and news and such.

The Harmony is fairly basic - nothing fancy. Got it at BestBuy for about $80, which was worth it for us.

No, not blacks. Propaganda. Racism. Pics of two guys kissing even pop up sometimes.

Black/white couples don't bother me. What bothers me is some woke fag in hollyweird forcing the concept on me.

I wear short hair, but if some fag in govt ordered me to wear short hair, I'd grow a man bun.

I have a Polk sound bar hanging from the bottom of the TV, and a very large subwoofer on the floor. What sound system are you using with your unit?

Would you be so kind as to display the code you used to resize that? I’ve had college level Fortran, Basic, Visual Basic and C++ but html is a mystery.

I’m not sure, but we found precious few without computer chips, ones that were strictly mechanical.

Nice! We had a Samsung 65”...great rich color, super clarity. It developed a “shadow” about the size of a basketball right in the center of the screen. Not a black spot...just a shadow. Luckily, it was slightly less than 4 years old, so the Sam’s club 4 yr warranty covered it. Sam’s sent a new LG which has also been great. Loved the Samsung though.

I have a wall picked out for an 82” (eventually)!

I think this is what he is talking about.

Yeah....that's just what you're going to see on pretty much all tv's in February. Just look at what month you're in. Then extrapolate whatever "********-history month" is currently in vogue for the given month. Content revolving around that will be plastered in the "feature" area of your screen.

I'm afraid the only way to truly avoid it is to turn the tv off.
