So I'm sitting at SeaTac airport. By my count there are no less than 8 people within earshot loudly playing videos, video chats, or in 1 case having a conversation over speakerphone.
It's obnoxious. A bunch of noise I don't want.
The interesting thing to me, and this holds with observations I've made over the last couple years, is this:
every single person doing this is over 50 years of age.
There are plenty of younger people playing videos, music, making phone calls, etc, but they're all using headphones.
So what happened? I'm in my thirties, and I'm pretty sure if I'd done the same thing 5 years ago, I'd get publicly shamed by one of my elders. I'm also pretty sure if this was 5 years ago it'd be people my age and younger that were the offenders. But now, things have totally inevrted, and all those same elders who would've shamed me are blasting audio at "I'm old and deaf" levels.
Didn't this used to be considered rude?
I don’t see adults doing that so much as kids 5 and under at the table in the restaurant doing it. Mom & Dad give the kids some noisemaker to occupy them and then proceed to let the little darlings do whatever they want. The infernal BEEPS and BOOPS from their mindless games drive me crazy.
Read God’s Word; pretty much spells out how things completely fall apart in the end of the age, including young losing any respect for anyone but themselves.
I refuse to use headphones and I’m more than a bit over 50.
Nearby peeps are just going to have to live with the Rush wannabees.
I no longer choose to fly the skies though.
They don’t like you.
We are crumbling, and the 55-year old obnoxious person next to you is just as much to blame as the Antifa lunatics.
I identify as a Boom Boxer....
Welcome to the party, pal.
Gear - the youngsters see it, get it.
It is my observation that, overall, people are simply more narcissistic and self-absorbed than they have ever been. They must think either they have a right to be as noisy as they want to, or even that others enjoy and want to hear want ever they have blasting. Same goes for the people that blast obnoxious hip-hop in their cars with the windows down.
End of rant.
Could it be, at least in some cases, age-related hearing loss, so they need to crank up the volume?
Those older people were once younger people but they never learned courtesy. Now they’re old and frail and worse about it because they think it gives them a right to be as rude as they’ve always been.
Yeah this selfish trend has been on the rise. Speakerphones, aggressive driving, walking wrong way at gym walking tracks, jerk behavior in planes, etc. Me first.
I think people see others do it and copy them and it multiplies Little original thinking happening these days.
I was in SeaTac last summer and had an extended layover. We opted to pay for the upgrade to one of those fancy smancy airline club lounges for a few hours, because it was going to be a long travel day. Omg. It was just as noisy and busy as the regular waiting areas. What did we pay for??
We are older, but we know better than to be so loud.
It would seem that earphones would assist that...
I really can’t hear the phone except on speaker.
I’m not walking around with big headphones.
America is becoming genetically inferior. As in undergoing a degradation of civilizational courtesies. We are as a nation genetically inferior to the America of the 1950s - it was well mannered, with the appropriate public etiquette that everyone obeyed. Since then, each decade has seen a slide, and now we are no better than a third world country like Romania, and will soon be as bad as Pakistan.
Instead of the 7 transistors of yore, my iPhone “radios” have billions.
[I’m VERY unlikely to visit SEA-TAC again]
