Stop Squatters Before It’s Too Late: How To Keep Unlawful Occupants From Taking Over Your Home

Squatting is on the rise: Across the country, homeowners have returned to their vacant properties only to discover that squatters have broken in, made themselves comfortable, and are refusing to leave.

Even worse, very little can be done to get them out.

KIRO 7 News in Washington reported last fall on Rainer Valley homeowner Jason Roth, who had a tenant who was no longer making rent payments but refused to leave the property. Without that rental income, Roth was forced to give up his own home and live in his car. Meanwhile, his squatter was not only living in Roth’s property rent-free, but also renting out the basement on Airbnb

All I know is, with the experience I had this week talking to a lawyer, the law is only in place to assist the criminal.

I bought a house when I was out of town one time and left it empty for about 16 years, it got some rough treatment and had some homeless people living in it for a while but I live in it now.

Wow—16 years? Which state? Many states have 10-30 year takeover from squatters, but some (NYC) is 30 days and other states are 2-5 years.
Also, certain states, when renting you have to go through the eviction process to get ride of delinquent renters. It could take up to 2 years. This is how they reduce private property ownership from “serfs” like us.

I know where the local Hell’s Angels are headquartered.

I bet they’d be happy to encourage any squatters to leave, for a small fee, of course....

They weren’t squatters and the local sheriff ran them out I think, I never saw them, they were just some homeless people wit no real intentions.

This is a simple, small, concrete block house that was already in a state of primitive since I had started adding studs and insulation on the inside of the walls etc. during the first couple of months of ownership when I had a handyman doing the work after I left town, so it was seen as a crash place rather than taking over a nice home.

Since there was only a ceiling in one room it would be rough living and windows were missing, as it was when I moved in, which made for a primitive first couple of years for me.

All I can think of is the couple in Brookline, MA that invited the illegal alien family into their home. How long before they outlive their welcome and refuse to leave?

“””””I know where the local Hell’s Angels are headquartered.”””””

Hell’s Angels vacated the place I lived in before here, they came in an shot the previous owner so I got it cheap, I never fixed the bullet holes.

I’m a landlord in Florida, so being a squatter probably won’t work anymore here. But when I have to evict someone, I have to show a copy of the lease. This is a contract. If they aren’t paying, then they’ve broken the contract. It occurs to me that before DeSantis signed the legislation outlawing squatter’s if my house got squatted in, I wouldn’t have a lease and I’d probably lose the house.

This is almost certainly a matter of whether you have a Republican judge, a rare thing, and a Republican sheriff. I was in Leon and the local judges and sheriff were very much on the side of the bad guy. I sold everything I owned there and moved to a rural county. It was more a money issue as the city owns the power company and Tallahassee has the highest power rates in Florida. The taxes are much higher but, best of all, there are three, count them, three EPAs. There’s the state, the county and the city. The last two are “self-funded.” That means they’ve come up with countless regulations they can cite you for. The regulations are so bad that they can start on any street and walk door to door writing citations. I think the minimum is $250. They literally only exist to pay their own salaries and benefits. (Plus, they make enough overage to pay a lot more into the general fund. It’s like having the Mafia with uniforms and guns. They force payment by making a lot of the violations “criminal.” This lets them use real coercion on you.)

“Fill your house with arsenic gas when you are not using it...”

LOL! I was thinking almost the same thing, except I was going with cyanide.

Also, since squatters have no fear when it comes to stealing your house, it makes sense that they’re OK with stealing your food, too. Before leaving on vacation or whatever, spice up the Twinkies and burritos in the freezer. 🏴‍☠️

This group of guys call themselves Squatter Squad. They don't use the courts.
They show up, they go in for inspection, and the trash takes itself out.

I've been wondering about that family. Wonder how they're doing.
