YORK COUNTY, S.C. — A York County man who was convicted of charges tied to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol is running for the House of Representatives.

State records show Elias Irizarry is running to represent South Carolina’s 43rd District in the House. The district covers parts of Chester and York counties.

Irizarry, a Republican candidate, filed on Wednesday, records show. Rep. Thomas R. “Randy” Ligon currently holds the seat and is running for reelection.

Channel 9 previously reported Irizarry was charged in March 2021 in connection with the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Irizarry, who was a cadet at The Citadel Military College, was seen on video outside and inside of the Capitol building, the FBI said.

Good for him. Note that he is running for the South Carolina House seat, not the US Congressional seat.
His opponent is Thomas R. "Randy" Ligon who is a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from the 43rd District, serving since 2018. He is a member of the Republican party.

In 2023, Ligon was briefly among the Republican co-sponsors of the South Carolina Prenatal Equal Protection Act of 2023, which would make women who had abortions eligible for the death penalty; he later withdrew his sponsorship. (Source: Wiki)

So a Republican has filed to run against a Republican. How does that work in South Carolina?

Given South Carolina has open primaries, the Republican candidate for general election is often chosen by Democrats.
