From our Special Correspondent.
NEWBERN, N.C., Wednesday, April 20, 1864.
Advices just received from Plymouth warrant the conclusion that it has fallen into the hands of the enemy. It was attacked by a heavy land force on Sunday evening, (the 17th,) in connection with an iron-clad ram which came down the Roanoke River. In the engagement, the ram sunk the Southfield, (gunboat.) and a small vessel which has frequently been on expeditions up the Roanoke, called the Bombshell. It also partially disabled the gunboat Miami. The ram getting below Plymouth, it is thought impossible for reinforcements to reach the place. The enemy numbered some ten to twelve thousand, and only took the place, if at all, by a most desperate effort. They were repulsed in four distinct charges, with great slaughter, and the attack, which commenced on Sunday night, continued until Tuesday morning, when the filing ceased. It is supposed that Gen. WESSELS, with his brave garrison, surrendered; but nothing definite is known as yet, none of our vessels having been able to reach them since Sunday. Our force numbered about 2,000.
Of the casualties I have been able to learn nothing definite, except that Capt. FLUSSER, of the Miami, and the senior officer of the navy at that place was killed by the recoil of a shot from one of his own guns. This officer is spoken of universally as one of the bravest of the brave. His loss is felt very much.

While our forces are assembling for an advance on the rebel capital, they have time to send against us
