The US Army's new manual on Russian tactics is an impressive-looking document. It's 280 pages packed with details and diagrams of how Russian soldiers are supposed to fight.
It is also evidence of a major reason why Russian troops have often fought poorly in the Ukraine war: they are not following their own playbook.
"A lot of the basic elements of that doctrine are sound enough that they could form a basis for successful operations," Scott Boston, a Russia military expert for the RAND Corp. think tank, told Business Insider. "But you do have to follow them."
To be clear, the US Army's manual — ATP7-100.1, "Russian Tactics" — specifies that it "is not meant to represent how the Russians are currently fighting in Ukraine." Nonetheless, armies try to fight according to their doctrine, or the fundamental principles that are intended to guide military operations.
For example, when a Russian division or brigade conducts an assault, units are supposed to advance in multiple echelons — or waves — of troops and tanks, tightly synchronized with reconnaissance, flank protection, engineering, artillery and air defense elements. The goal is to hit hard, move fast, breach the defenses and advance deep into the enemy rear.

As Shoigu told everyone, the Russian army is destroying the Ukrainian army.
Advances and territory are a secondary concern.
Filling bloody dumpsters with dead and grievously injured Ukrainians is the primary concern.
Somewhere there is some advice about the defensive benefits of Ukrainian seasonal mud that was certainly ignored.
No matter how much the US Army and government pretends, Russia did not launch this in terms of an all out invasion. There is some meaning to their term special military operation. They never had the slightest intent to conquer the entire country. They have limited objectives, and hopes they could force them into a settlement very early on those terms. The fantasy continues for the neocons.
Then why did they attack Kyiv?
“Filling bloody dumpsters with dead and grievously injured Ukrainians is the primary concern.”
Don’t complain when others cheer for Ruzzians who get burned alive, shot, eviscerated, decapitated, mangled, or maimed.
I'm not cheering the slaughter like you do.
I'm simply stating the facts that Little Vloddy and his Western Media cheerleaders are burying.
Literally.
"hopes they could force them into a settlement very early on those terms"
The pretenses of people like you and Boris the Clown have killed and maimed hundreds of thousands of people on both sides.
Mostly Ukrainians, though...
Putin was going to install a stooge like Aleksandr Lukashenko if he had taken Kyiv on Day One.
“They never had the slightest intent to conquer the entire country.”
“Then why did they attack Kyiv?”
I wonder the same thing. Why waste so much equipment and manpower on an attack on Kyiv if Russia had no intention on conquering all of Ukraine?
Probably.
Our color revolution in the summer of 2020 installed the pantz-shizzing Biden stooge.
No, that honor goes to Putin. You know, the one that actually invaded Ukraine and is continuing the invasion. All the killing stops once he decides to send his troops home.
“Filling bloody dumpsters with dead and grievously injured Ukrainians is the primary concern.”
Your primary concern is stated. Now don’t expect me to give a damn about your feelings when some Ruzzian barbarian gets sent to Hell where he belongs.
It's just a matter of time before Russia clears out what is left of the Ukrainian military in Donetsk and Lugansk. The Russians will have no problem taking everything east of the Dnieper river.
The slow grind is designed to save Russian lives.
One has to be stupid to think that was there intent. But, believing propaganda makes one stupid.
That is what YOU LIVE FOR, Megan. You couldn't give a hoot about how many more Ukrainians die or how much more territory Ukraine loses.
