Leonid Meteors in 2002

Explanation: All during today, APOD will be posting the best images of the Leonid Meteor Shower as seen by the wide-angle digital cameras perched around the world as part of the Night Sky Live (NSL) Project. The main APOD site will be updated several times with topical information and new images. Pictured above, to start, is an image from last year's Leonids taken with the NSL camera in Israel. The diffuse glow on the upper left will be mostly gone from that camera's images this year, because the town of Mitzpe Ramon has agreed to dim its lights.

This is it, folks! Tonight is the night to stay up and get out and see a show!

I'm waiting for the clouds to thin and/or break up. The timing is always bad here. Three clear days and now it's cloudy. I've had the opportunity to miss lunar eclipses and auroral displays; now my viewing of the Leonids is in jeopardy.

Hopefully where you are is clear and dry. If not, the above webcams will help, as will NASA TV: THREAD

It was cloudy -with the moon shining through - at 10:45 PM when I went for Subway.

Now it's mostly clear. Just hoping it will stay that way!

I will be watching the Leonids from the next town south of here, out over the dark expanse of Lake Winnebago.

The evening started clear, but gradually clouded over. At midnight the full moon was barely visible. No meteor shower.

It was a very pretty show here in central FL! From 5 a.m.- 6 a.m. eastern, I counted 127. At times, there were groups of two or three that would flash through the sky at once. Over a dozen were really brilliant, lasted for a second or two, and left trails.
