Following the success of Desert Storm, GHW Bush’s approval numbers were sky high. He thought himself such a shoo-in he picked his Commerce Secretary to run the 1992 re-election campaign. The Commerce Secretary had neither the skills nor the desire to do the job.

But Bush’s ratings were so high, he didn’t think it would matter. Those same ratings spooked the Democrats who couldn’t find anyone willing to run and lose. Who, as you might say, wants to go down in history as losing to Bush? Then Bill Clinton decided what the hell and jumped in.

Meanwhile the economy was worsening, eroding Bush’s popularity, which was impacted by his failing to honor his pledge of no new taxes.

You know the rest. Perot split the conservative vote and ‘designated loser’ Clinton moved into the White House.
