Reich: Trump's curious coalition
The Baltimore Sun ^ | May 22, 2018 | Robert Reich, former US Secretary of Labor

Posted on 05/23/2018 11:13:32 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Donald Trump's strategy for keeping power is to build up his coalition of America's white working class and the nation's ownership class.

It's a curious coalition, to say the least. But if Democrats don't respond to it, it could protect Mr. Trump from impeachment and even re-elect him. It just might create a permanent Republican majority around an axis of white resentment and great wealth.

Two decades ago, Democrats and Republicans competed over the middle class. They battled over soccer moms and suburban "swing" voters.

Since then the middle class has shrunk while the working class has grown, and vast wealth has been accumulated by a comparative few who now own a large portion of America. Some of their wealth has taken over American politics.

Enter Mr. Trump.

Counties whose voters shifted from Mr. Obama to Mr. Trump in 2016 had lost economic ground to the rest of America, to an even greater extent than solidly Republican counties. Mr. Trump is counting on the unwavering support of these mostly white working-class voters.

Meanwhile, much of the ownership class has come over to Mr. Trump. He's counting on it to bankroll Republican politicians who are loyal to him.

Since becoming president, Mr. Trump has sought to reward both sides of this coalition — tossing boatloads of money to the ownership class and red meat to the white working class....

What’s curious about a symbiotic owners workers relationship/coalition? Both obviously need each other! Plus we are all the Tax Payers in this nation!

I find it very curious how men like Reich casually reference impeachment as if they consider it a mere political maneuver. No need for a crime. No need for evidence of a crime. No need for a trial. It’s just a given that more Democrats in office will lead to an impeachment.

Impeachment is going to be a standard tactic of the Democrats from now on every time a Republican president is in office.

Reich conveniently overlooks the fact that it is the Progressive ideology that has infected, and controls, every facet of Democrat Party politics today--an ideology which enforces conformity of thought, speech and policy to its totalitarian demands!

Progressives may posture themselves as allowing "choice," but the so-called "choice" leaves only one option on policy matters such as abortion, redistribution of one's earnings, and a demand for "government" control of almost every aspect of life. The result of Progressive ideology, as everywhere else in the world where it has been tried, is mediocrity, suppression of the rights of individuals, and poverty for most, with great accumulation of wealth to elite politicians and those who cater to them.

...his coalition of America's white working class and the nation's ownership class.

The what? The "ownership class". That doesn't appear to have any specific definition, but if Trump's capture of it and the white working class got him into office, it's bound to be a pretty big class. That, or it's neo-Marxian mumbo jumbo and Reich doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. I know which way I'm betting.

I have noticed a commonality among the members of Trump's coalition and it has nothing to do with race or economics. It is that they love their country. The 0bama strategy for breaking up that coalition appears to be forcing a "fundamental transformation" that will make the country not worth loving. It doesn't work. All it does is build resistance, and it did.

That’s all good for me.

A lot better than creating a permanent liberal fascist majority out of black and ethnic nationalists based on black resentment, those who are still field hands after all these years, ensconced in their sanctuary cities. Who would want that ,eh?

“Since then the middle class has shrunk while the working class has grown”

A shrinking middle class IS THE REASON for growing MAGA support.
Folks feel like they’ve been getting screwed for many years.

Corrupt blather from an ignoranti who understands nothing but revels in his fantasized brilliance. It is amazing how corruptocrats understand Trump through the lens of their own ugliness. This is an excellent example of evil mindset.

Good change. I do expect by 2020 a sizeable number of African American voters will shift to the Republican side.

"It's the Reagan Democrat effect," Mr. Reichhhhhhhhhh!

And when that happens, you can kiss goodbye to those fat speaker fees for washed up Haaaaavard professors.

But I do hear Barnum and Bailey's circus is opening up again and is looking for men of your fine stature.
