Should Democrats play it safe with a job guarantee?
The Week ^ | July 27, 2018 | Jeff Spross

Posted on 07/27/2018 11:05:45 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Democrats seem to agree: A job guarantee will be part of the 2020 election debate. What they don't yet agree on is what a "job guarantee" is.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is working on a full blown national bill to enshrine the right to a job. Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) has a bill that would essentially run a test pilot of Sanders' program. The Congressional Full Employment Caucus has been pushing yet another national job guarantee bill, with some differences from Sanders' plan, for years. Finally, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) just introduced his own bill, which would subsidize more private and public hiring alike.

The Democrats are a big diverse party, and they'll have to negotiate a lot of different preferences and approaches to ultimately unite behind such an ambitious idea. But as they come to an agreement around one shared definition of a job guarantee, the Democrats also need to understand the choices they make along the way — and their consequences.

Sanders sounds like he's working on a genuine guarantee: A government-run national system that, if you're unemployed and want work, will consult with your community to design a job for you that pays $15 an hour, plus health benefits. This would eradicate involuntary unemployment, and set a quality floor that no job — public or private — could fall below without simply losing work to the job guarantee program. That's especially important to people of color and other marginalized Americans, usually shoved to the fringes of employment: They're the last to benefit from business cycle upswings in private hiring, and the first to get tossed aside in downturns....

"What work would be done?"

Cleaning the streets of needles and feces in the democrat cities? Somehow, I doubt this is what they mean.

Trump is delivering voters steaks and Democrats are working on their marketing strategy for gristle. How do we ever lose any elections to these morons?

This is all craziness and designed to appeal to all the lazy bums they are bringing in here. Of course a guaranteed job isn’t really a job, it’s the beginning to the end of America.

It’s a guarantee that you don’t have to have a job. It’s a guarantee not to work.

Add a work requirement for welfare recipients; no work, no eat. Everybody would
have a job.

You'd think an understanding of basic economic principles would be a pre-requisite for election to the US Senate. Evidently not - apparently any ignoramus can get elected and work on "full blown" bits of arrant nonsense for other ignoramuses to vote on.

“That’s especially important to people of color and other marginalized Americans, usually shoved to the fringes of employment: They’re the last to benefit from business cycle upswings in private hiring, and the first to get tossed aside in downturns....”

Is this not the crux of their perceived ‘problem’? And, if so, is this not the ‘problem’ on which they should be focused?

And, yet, they offer only more government (taxpayer) spending, and a larger bureaucracy into which they can seed their cronies and hangers-on, to nurse forever at the taxpayer breast.

Perhaps they should be focused on addressing the breakdown of the nuclear family in those constituencies, and the poor educational performance and social ills that come with that.

These people are not so much marginalized, as they have marginalized themselves, with the assistance of the libturds, over the last 75 years as a consequence of the politics of low expectations and victimization so championed by the left.

And, the left’s answer is merely more of the same.

Sick and disgusting.

What good is a job guarantee among those who don’t want a job? Like saying roaches can have a free whiff of Raid anytime they wish....

If we truly have surplus labor not deployed (as I expect) then we have no justification for continuing the H2-B and other visas.

They are afraid of losing black vote on account of Trump’s progress on unemployment rate.

Job guarantee? You WILL do what the government tells you to do. There is another word for this...communism.

When I am as a senior in college back in 1990, I got in some trouble with glug glug vroom vroom. The events of my sentence are basically what started my political awakening. As with most people who ar not career criminals, part of sentencing and the primary method to keep ofherwise productive people out of jail was community service. At the time I was a senior in mechanical engineering at University of Washington in Seattle, and was taking 18 credits. I also was working 25 hours a week, and also supplemented my income by donating blood plasma and any other temp jobs I could get my hands on. So I was pretty busy. But I did the crime and part of my time was now filled by working in soup kitchens in downtown seattle. So I would wake up early saturday And sunday, take the bus downtown and go to work. The work was easy, mostly sorting food donations, separating good vegatables versus spoiled, helping to set dishes up in the buffets, setting up tables and chairs, clearing tables and chairs, and washing dishes afterwards, and just generally being a gofer for any task needing done. Pretty much anybody could do this kind of work, it took no special knowledge or training. What I began to notice is that there were hundreds of people who used these free food services. There were some who truly needed them and though some of these had severe mental issues, some just had physical problems mostly from age. This group in general were very thankfuk for these services. A large majority, however, seemed to have no obvious mental or physical maladies. They shambled in and out day after day, were rude, entitled, made it difficult for the people who were truly in need and needed to be watched like hawks. I said before that I was pretty busy with my own school and work, yet i could not understand why not one of these people who use these services every day could not contribute just a simple hour or two a week. I understand there are some tasks that require a level of trust and some that may be dangerous, and that some of these people may cause more problems and safety issues than they are worth, but surely there must be something. Bussing their own tables perhaps. That started me thinking about the differences of conservative versus liberal.

The LEFT MEDIA CARTEL gives them a 10 point advantage.

If you have cable tv, you are funding the 10 point advantage

Can you be fired from a guaranteed job.

It sounds like to me, the DEMS just want to increase their welfare payments.

Waiting for Pelosi to pipe up and say the increased taxes from the guaranteed jobs will grow the economy.
