Last week, Republican Troy Balderson struggled to beat Democrat Danny OConnor in a House special election in suburban Columbus an Ohio district the GOP has held for decades and President Trump won by 11 percentage points two years ago. (The race still too close to call with a margin of 1,564 votes wont be declared until Aug. 24, when all the absentee ballots have been counted.)
In May, Republican Rick Saccone lost a special election to Democrat Conor Lamb in Pennsylvania, another district that voted solidly Trump.
Both Ohio and Pennsylvania represent the new coalition of Trump voters Rust Belt states that were expected to swing blue in 2016 but in fact went for the unorthodox billionaire who promised to Make America Great Again.
So, why two years later, is the GOP having so much trouble connecting with these people? Is it Trump? The party establishment?
Ohio Gov. John Kasich said Baldersons weak showing was a referendum on the president. Voters here sent a message to the Republicans to knock it off, Kasich told CBS News last week. Stop the chaos, the division, no more of this family separation that we see at the border or taking peoples health care away. I think [people] have . . . basically had enough and theyre sending a message to the Republicans, including the Republican in the White House . . .

Balderson was going nowhere til Trump endorsed him.....he skyrocketed to WIN the race (albeit closely).
Kasich makes no mention of his own dirty deeds........he was loathe to see Balderson win.
That’s the real story crazy Kasich wont tell.
Trump is the reason this Bush League Republican was pulled across the finish line despite his opposition to MAGA.
Vote fraud helps the Democrat...We need to cut down on this early voting scam...yes I call it a scam...if you are too busy to vote on the 1 day, then you aren’t serious about the government.
I wouldn’t believe anything out of Kasich’s mouth.....even if he stood on the local courthouse steps & announced each morning what day of the week it was.
He seems to have a large hollow area between his ears.
Kaysuck.
Did Kasich help Troy win?
That’s not true. He led in all polls until the ferry last one. They had narrowed. And the last one showed O’Connor up by a point. He didn’t move the needle much.
LS and exit polls show that there was not a get out the vote effort. Many didnt know there was an election. Kasuck carries the burden on that....and the local RNC
LS and exit polls show that there was not a get out the vote effort.
Kasich will rue the day for shorting the GOp and PDJT. In fact KAsich seems to be thicker than an antique oak plank. The GOP has changed, and never again wil it become a platform dedicated solely to the country club elites like Kasich, Ryan, Romney and Co.They are the walking dead of the political world of America.
Its why I call him Kasuck
She is right in that local issues count for a lot in house races...
You have to combine them both...
The economy on the national level...and then what you are going to do for the district economy..
