While I agree, I think the Republicans were complicit in that they ran two of the weakest candidates imaginable. While it’s not the party’s fault, in that the party doesn’t pick the candidates, it is the fault of every voter who voted for weak candidates. Part of that if due to states that allow crossover voting. Part of it is due to who has the money required to run in a primary. There are probably hundreds of Americans who, if elected, would make another Ronald Reagan or Donald Trump. But, we will never know their names because they are too busy just surviving.
Politics is like an arbitration. Nobody gets what they want and everybody is dissatisfied. On the bright side, and as evidenced by the #metoo attack on Bernie, the Left is beginning to suffer the negative consequences of their polarization. There are at least two Left’s now. Possibly more. That degree of fracture gives conservatives (notice I didn’t say Republicans) another chance.
