thanks for the ping
I have a classic pear shape... it comes from both sides of my family. I'd like to look like J.Lo that's as realistic in weight loss as I can get. The low carb diet is my only option with the kind of food my family eats. Plus I don't do Atkins full on, I really like protein power which to me is a knock off of Atkins. I didn't bother picking up South Beach, I know it's a Atkins rip off.

"Men would poke a plate of that stuff with a stick to see if it was a nesting area for pheasants before they'd think of eating it!"Thank you for the morning chuckle! We're not strictly following Atkins or any other diet plan, but we are making a concerted effort to increase proteins, enjoy some fats, and reduce sugars and refined carbs. It's been a great help with our 10 year old son's migraine headaches. My husband would like to lose a few pounds, so we can make good use of your tasty recipes!
I agree completely about how counting calories all day can make for an unhealthy obsession with diet. I struggled with my weight mostly in high school and college days, until I threw away the calorie counters and let my appetite be my guide. Voila! Never had a major weight problem again.

I eat raw fauna, the author means flora. You can only be smart and clever when you use the write words. CORRECTION: 'rite words'. CORECTION: 'word'. CORRECTION: 'CORRECTION'.

the thinking and counting food and it's components, keeps the laboring thought of diet, dominating too much of their thought. Thinking about eating, and fretting about it constantly, is IMHO, why so many people fall off the wagon and eventually return to their old bad habits. Thinking about food all the time, makes you hungry, all of the time! AMEN, Carlo!

raw fauna and grasses and topped by a bland sour concoction, and littered with potpourri, with a side order of gooey soft curdled stuff, with a teaspoon of boysenberries! Mmmmmmmmm! Is it lunch time yet?

My wife has posted this recipe before - but for a mouse like pudding - low carb - try this.
Take a box of sugar free instant pudding - replace the milk with half and half (very low in carbs) mix as usual - pour into servinf dishes (if you want) give it about 10 minutes - serve with a great big dollup (sp) of real whip cream. What a wonderful dessert!

I'm on what I would call "modified South Beach." The main differences between SB and Adkins (as far as I know, someone correct me if I am wrong!) are that in SB there is no carb counting, there are "good fats" and "bad fats," (I don't think Adkins is so restrictive on acceptable fats) ketosis is not encouraged, and there are a few carb dishes not allowed on Adkins (brown rice, cous cous, whole wheat pasta or breads) that are acceptable in small amounts beginning the third week of SB. (I haven't started eating these yet even though I am into my 5th week -- there are so many different vegetables that are allowed).
I try to stick as closely to SB as I can, and I absolutely do not cheat where carbs are concerned, but sometimes I don't stick within the SB definition of "good fats." I figure that if I blow it on the carbs I eat, I have blown the diet, but if I deviate from the SB list of "good fats," I might be outside of SB guidelines but I am still on the Adkin's diet. How's that for rationalization?
What you say about SB and the freedom from counting carbs is very true in my case. When it comes to dieting, I tend to obssess about calories, fats, carbs, whatever. With SB, I am completely set free from all of that. That, along with eliminating my cravings for carbs, has completely changed my eating habits.
After going on SB, I also discovered another benifit: I don't feel guilty about food or eating any longer. Before, it didn't matter how much or how little I ate, it didn't matter if I was as thin as a rail. I felt guilty no matter what went in my mouth. Now I actually enjoy my food; before that was a totally foreign concept. I know that what I am eating is acceptable to the diet, and regardless of how delicious it is or the rich sauce it is in, it won't be long before I step on the scale and find that another pound is GONE.

I'm sure this will turn into another 2,000 post thread, so I might as well add my 2 cents.
I am doing SouthBeach. I've lost 12 lbs after trying several other methods, including the Zone. My endo is completely supportive of this diet for me. While I didn't drop 20 lbs in 2 weeks, taking thyroid meds makes it a little harder to lose the weight, but it's coming off.
If I were a real 'man' about it, I'd do Dr. Bernstein's diet for diabetics, but it seems very restrictive for the long term. SouthBeach is something I can live with. In fact, my 26 yr old son (who doesn't have a weight problem) eats the same thing I'm eating, just with larger portions.
Going lower carb and a knowledge of the glycemic index are essential for diabetics. I've had a real problem w/my diabetes this year, but in the past 8 weeks I've gone off of 2 oral meds and halved my insulin due to the diet.
Personally, I think the Am Diabetes Assn people will burn in hell for telling diabetics to eat baked potatoes and that 'a carb is a carb.'
I tell every new diabetic that I meet to throw away the ADA stuff and read Sugar Busters, SouthBeach, Atkins, or the Zone. They won't regret it.

ions, eons, ah, what's the difference!?!
Personally, I like steak AND salad. :-)

Carlo, I tried this at our local
Costco's demonstration and I've been eating it ever since:
Buy 1 brick of QUESO BLANCO Cheese. Cut slabs about 1/2 inch thick.
Fry in teflon pan with NO oil on high heat until it browns.
Flip and do same.
That's it....then eat This cheese will keep its shape and get a nutty flavor. We shake Lawry's garlic salt on top. That's it. It's sooooooooooooo good!

Carlo, I love your list, but I have a problem.
I HATE THE FAKE SUGAR!!!
I don't think it is too healthy, anyway, but I just don't like it. It seems like all the low carb cookbooks and recipes are focused on sweets using the sugar substitutes. I am frustrated. What do you suggest?
