Iraqi police chief assassinated
The police chief of the British-controlled southern Iraqi city of Amarah has been shot dead as he left a mosque after prayers.
Brigadier Hamid Hadi Hassan al-Abe was leaving the al-Hussein mosque after Friday prayers when he was gunned down by assailants firing from several locations.
The assailants escaped.
Several hundred men, many of them armed with rifles and pistols, have turned out for Brigadier al-Abe's funeral. He will be buried in the Shiite holy city of Najaf.
Brigadier al-Abe had a good relationship with British occupation authorities, who are responsible for the city, about 75 miles north of Basra.
Iraqis who work with the US-led coalition have been targeted by Iraqi insurgents, who are most active in the Sunni Muslim areas to the north and west of Baghdad.
However, Amarah is populated primarily by Shiite Muslims, who have been generally more accepting of the occupation because of their suffering under the regime of Saddam Hussein, a Sunni.

Prayers for the family of this fine Iraqi patriot. Why didn't these fine Iraqi patriots and Iraqi heros do this when Saddam and his goons were still in power?

Because Saddam and his goons would have responded in a way the Coalition will not. And that's too bad.

Thank God George Washington and the rest of our Founding Fathers didn't think like these so-called heroic, patriotic Iraqis. Our Founding Fathers were faced with *overwhelming* odds, and defeated them. Instead of chosing liberty or death, the Iraqis decided to exist under a dictator.

Instead of choosing liberty or death, the Iraqis decided to exist under a dictator.I agree completely with the thought, and that is something about this entire episode I just cannot figure out. I will work on it, though.

Oh, (bad word). The Iraqis are going to have to sort out the good guys from the bad ones, and I hope we make them capable of doing it soon.

Because Sadam and his goons would have killed everyone associated with anyone he expected was involved, wife, kids, grandkids the whole extended family.
He had no scruples about how to deal with people, kill them all and let Allah sort them out.
We are a bit to civilized to do that but that is about what it will take to eradicate the Sadam loyalists.

The Iraqi police chief's death is bad news the mainstream media didn't pick up on (or I haven't heard it). Maybe there was too much supportive action by Iraqis at the funeral.

The Iraqis are going to have to sort out the good guys from the bad ones, and I hope we make them capable of doing it soon. How do you expect them to do that when the American TSA is still feeling up grandma and accosting little children? Hell, we can't even get it right.

Start here and follow the link to
Tales of Saddam's Brutality. I blame the press for not informing the people. The whole world should know by now how seriously twisted this regime was - and how long the Iraqi people lived in terror. Neighborhood Ba'athist 'minders' may have responded to a child accidentally letting it slip that his father criticized Saddam by imprisoning, then murdering the whole family. Sometimes they'd simply burn a baby alive in front of his mother to teach her a lesson. One mother hid her teenage son in a small, hidden room in the basement for over 12 years, because a paperwork error said that he had already been killed along with his father and brother.
In the end, knowing the press is not interested in accuracy - it's up to us to stay informed.
