Thank God it's low-carb. T.G.I. Friday's, the casual dining chain known for its flavor-laden but often-fattening foods, on Friday will announce a deal with an unlikely partner: Atkins (yes, the diet Atkins).

Under a multiyear agreement, Atkins Nutritionals will become a very visible presence at all 523 domestic Friday's restaurants, partnering to create a stream of low-carb entr

It's a fad — and not a very healthy one

I really would like to know if the people that comment on Atkins have ever tried it. Most descriptions of it don't even come close to what it really is. What is unhealthy about eating veggies, some fruits, dairy and meat and eliminating processed flour and sugar products?

Yea, everything theyve been saying for 50 yrs is off base. According to the "establishment", the only way to lose weight and keep it off is adopt a low cal diet for the rest of your life. Atkins has shown that to be a neanderthal approach. But its their idea, so they cant gove it up!

Most of this resistance to Atkins can be traced back to the liberal PETA et al.

Bread IS bad for you.

I've been saying for months that this sort of thing would happen. I wish I'd heard a way to financially invest in the low-carb trend.

"It's a fad — and not a very healthy one"

Maybe, Maybe not, all I know is I went from 280 LBS to 195 LBS went from size 44 pants to 34, my blood pressure and cholesterol are in the normal range and I feel alot better and have been doing atkins for a year and 1/2.

Perhaps Ms. Boyd would have thought it healthier If I would have maintained my 280 LBS and had high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Who knows... maybe someday they will prove that Atkins is killing me, but I figure at least I will die thin and full of energy rather than fat and down all the time.

I'm with you. I've often said, the "health problems" Atkins has meant to me include NO MORE acid reflux, NO MORE intractable, frequent tachycardia, NO MORE daylong lethargy, NO MORE aches and pains when I walk, NO MORE weekly killer headaches...

...and all sorts of HORRIBLE stuff like that.

I write as a recent Atkins dieter: 3 months, over 30 lbs. lost, less chlorestorol, lower blood pressure (what's so unhealthy about that??).

Rule 1. Read Dr. Atkins book.

Rule 2. Most so-called "Atkins-dieters" don't know anything about Atkins. Tell them to read the book and, after talking to 2 or 3 of them, read the book again!

Rule 3. Drink loads of water. The weight you lose goes into your kidney and it needs help in flushing it out. Take the supplemental vitamins Atkins recommends.

Rule 4. Test occasionally for ketosis with the ketosis-strips - though I (and some others I have talked to) can see the weight coming out due to changes in urination (someone should describe this scientifically).

Rule 5. Help destroy the FDA before it destroys Atkins with labelling requirements and assinine statements (like "no way to lose weight without eating less calories", etc.)

One way to invest in low-carb is to buy publically traded egg stocks. They have done quite well this year.

Good for you apillar. My wife and I have been on Atkin's since January and have both let go of 35 pounds each of fat. I am at WHO now and have five pounds more to easily let go of. The grocery stores in my town cannot understand why they are having to put there Krispy Creme donuts on sale for lack of purchasing. There bread and cookies also are in locations for point of purchase and setting there. Of course the meat and cheese section is having hard time keeping up with the demand. Of course it is a fad that will go away not. Hurray for the merchants that see the light and change alter there product.

"New Atkins offerings will be featured on two full menu pages at Friday's — with the number of carbohydrates in each item spelled out."

That's a red flag for me. With Atkins, you don't "count carbs." You simply AVOID all high-glycemic carbs. Anyone who's read the book knows which carbs these are. This tells me that Friday's is less than enthusiastic about this and hasn't really grasped what Atkins is about. These Atkins menu items sound more like what you'd eat on the maintenance phase and less what you'd eat during the loss phase. And nowhere near what you'd eat on induction.

It is unhealthy if you are in business which uses processed flour, sugar and junk. Other than that it works for me. I wish more restaurant chains would put low-carb items on their menus.

But if people stick with steak, salad with full fat dressing such as ranch or bleu cheese for example, substitute grilled veggies for the potato that is low carb. If you have to bring your own dressing.

You can do low carb eating out you just have to ask for what you want and if the place doesn't oblige you, take your business elsewhere.

Exactly. I shied away from it for years because I thought it was the "steak and eggs diet" since that's the way it was presented on TV.

"It's a fad — and not a very healthy one," says Peggy Boyd, a certified nutritionist in Los Altos, Calif. "The Atkins diet doesn't supply the nutritional needs of most individuals. It's a Madison Avenue gimmick."

Mzzzzz Boyd, obesity is up 400 % in 25 years and you are part of the reason for this Fact...
