A surprising gift request from a left-wing relative--need help
Vanity

Posted on 12/21/2003 12:27:44 PM PST by Our man in washington

My dear sister and her husband are both leftist professors in prominent universities. Both have established reputations in their fields. To give you an idea of how leftist they are, they fly a big U.N. flag in front of her house instead of a U.S. flag.

Anyway, I e-mailed them asking what they wanted for Christmas. I got the following very surprising response from my brother-in-law:

"Your sister and I would love a subscription to whichever right-of-center publication you consider most thoughtful, informative, well-reasoned, empirically-grounded, responsible, etc. In our world, it's easy to stay apprised of informed opinion on the left, but the right is less accessible."

So, what do freepers think? It can't be a magazine where the right just talks to themselves. It also should be fairly highbrow; these are professors, after all. My first thought is "The National Review" but is there a lesser-known publication that might meet these goals?

Thanks for any thoughts anyone has. We might be able to convert two folks who influence hundreds of college students with their ideas. I was delighted they asked. (They really are nice folks, so I'm willing to be generous in my gift.)

Before any publication, buy them the book RADICAL SON by David Horowitz.

NR they probably wouldn't read. The American Spectator is informative and witty to boot.

Besides Radical Son and either NR or TAS, get on Pokey78's mailing list and email them every editorial that Mark Steyn writes. Same for Krauthammer and Victor Davis Hansen, as far as that goes.

Er, why can they not put in their own subscription request? Are they so paranoid they believe the VRWC will come after them and brainwash them? Just teasing...

I agree with #2 - Radical Son, Weekly Standard, NR; perhaps a few book ideas - Ann Coulter would be a great start, Bias b Goldberg, etc.

Good Luck!

Sign them up here then they can learn in real time.

Even if this forum probly moves to fast and is to complicated for a "leftist" to handle.

Might be fun to watch anyway

Invite them to FR. Every conservative magazine known to man get their articles posted here. They can get informed and get informed debate as long as they don't have thin hides.

Ditto RADICAL SON, but consider The Weekly Standard.

The Wall Street Journal if it is in your price range. Insight Magazine is good but a little radical.

I'm partial to The American Spectator, although it probably falls outside of the "thoughful" area and heads more toward "polemically strident," so maybe National Review would be a better choice.

Ditto on RADICAL SON as a book although it's mostly 'ancient history' of the left but if they read it, they will see some of their icons exposed for the creeps they were. I'd say National Review is probably the best mainstream right zine. Always well written.

I am sure many folks here will come up with good ideas.

Along with what they suggest, why don't you also send them:

The Weekly Standard is a great magazine, but they might just piss themselves when they see articles written by people who signed the "PNAC charter"
