No, it was not the only problem - Rouco Varela is extremely orthodox, and gave a very good homily on the subject. But what the gay group is suing him for specifically are his remarks about social security and state benefits.
BTW, what do you mean when you say there's no religious freedom in Spain? There certainly was when I was there two weeks ago...
