Letter from Congressman Sam Johnson
Letter from my Congressman to me | letter | Sam Johnson

Posted on 02/04/2004 4:51:24 AM PST by normy

Dear "Normy"

Knowing of your intrest in immigration, I wanted to let you know my take on President Bush's recent proposal.

The Administration immigration initiative is unworkable and irresponsible. Please be assured that I strongly opposeany and all forms of amnesty.

At the moment, I'm workingwith members of the Texas delegation to counter President Bush's proposal and develop a commo-sense sollution. We must realistically acknowledge that border-security issues and law enforcement go hand in hand with immigration. At this point, I only agree with President Bush that illegal immigration has become a problem of catastrophic proportions.

Immigration to this country is a privilege, not a right. I fully support legal immigration. People who wait their turn to become citizens should be rewarded. Those who enter America illegally shoul be deported.

In addition, as a member of the immigration Reform Caucus, we are thoroughly examining this hot-button issue.

Frankly, homeland security means protecting our country from potential threats. Ways to do that include shoring up our borders and stopping illegal immigration. We must keep America safe.

God bless you and God bless America.

Sincerely,

Sam Johnson

Member of Congress

That is how it works, from the bottom up. Bush has done many great things for America but this immigration proposal is not one of them. That is why we have a Congress.

Keep Bush to fight the war, cut taxes and install judges but make sure your congrssman keeps the other things in check.

By the way this is my first post, but when I recieved this letter yesterday I thought I would share it.

This is a great example of how we let the President know we aren't happy with one issue or another as we travel down the road to the 2004 Presidential election.

A letter to a Senator, Representative and even the President himself, sends a clearer message about what we want and don't want, than does jumping up and down in a hysterical cyber tantrum, claiming so-and-so has lost your vote and/or urging others to vote for a guaranteed loser so you can "SEND A MESSAGE".

THIS IS HOW TO SEND A MESSAGE.

This is posted as an EXAMPLE, not as an admonition towards anyone I pinged on this reply.

Things can be so simple if we only knew and had direction.

Thanx, norm

I totally agree. This is a most excellent approach.

BTW, Welcome normy.

It also has the side effect of being quiet, right? So as not to annoy the claque.

Gee, I'd better get right on "sending a message" to Carolyn Maloney, Chuck Schumer, and Hillary Clinton about immigration. I'm sure they'll give my views every bit as much attention as they have in the past. So they'll have two letters from me in the big stack next to the circular file, so what? A little redundancy never hurts.

And fortunately I have Republicans Bloomberg and Pataki in my corner...oh wait...

Never mind, what's important is that there is absolutely no need for me to ever voice my displeasure on a public forum. It bothers some people.

Hey, I am in the same exact position as you are.

As you know I am just as much a New Yorker as you are.

And my letters probably get file 13'd also.

You do what you feel is right...or not.

Let's just sit back and bitch and moan and complain and tear apart any and all positive measures that we can use to make our voices heard.

Don't letter, email or vote the right man for the right time.

Hellinahandbasket.

I bring this report having returned from a recent visit to our nation’s capital in Washington D.C. I am truly saddened to have to bring this news; our beloved America is in a comma and is near death. A handful of patriots gathered there at the seat of our republic to reminisce, to talk again about the vision and sacrifice of the founders of our country.

Men like Jefferson, Adams, Madison and Mr. Washington. We remembered the lives of Patrick Henry, John Jay, Ben Franklin and notable others with reverence. We live now on a ship of state called Titanic. We eat, we drink, we tend to our little shuffle board games, we polish the silverware, and we journey the rest of the little distance we have left in oblivion. America chokes on herself like a beautiful lake that remembers the days before milfoil took hold. We remembered freedom before terrorist influences like the IRS, corrupt courts and the federal reserve system spread their encumbrances across the land. Back when journalism was real and tyranny was revealed. When America was new and her children were willing to stand guard. Before politicians imprisoned us. Before they put their hands in our pockets, stole our freedom and our prosperity telling us all the good things they would do for us with our hard-earned money.

We talked about our current tax system, founded on fraud which keeps moms and dads split apart and hard at the grindstone to overcome it. And a public school system, which steals the minds of our children, filling their heads with lies, turning them against America and turning them on to failed socialist ideologies, which pollute our native culture of self-reliance and liberty. I lament with a sad heart the disappearance of patriots who once understood the dangers pressing against the lifeblood of our nation and stood fast against them.

Do you fancy yourself a patriot? Would you be willing to suffer with us to learn about the enemies of our liberty? Would you be one of the very few who wish to turn this ship Titanic from its dangerous course?

My name is Wes Miller. I’m the MN State Coordinator for We The People Foundation.
We advocate a return to the wisdom of our Constitution and the rule of law.

Fine, I will just shut up. It won't change reality one bit, but at least I won't interfere visually with that vital appearance of unity.

"I" am not, never have, and never will tell you to "just shut up".

I was merely trying to suggest an additional positive way for people to send the message, and help to ensure we make about having a STRONG, COMMITTED, CONSERVATIVE MAJORITY in our CONGRESS and in our WHITE HOUSE.

I am sorry if you somehow feel my every post that is aimed at getting things going in a positive manner, rather than dooming and glooming everything is taken personally towards you.

It isn't, and never was.

I think this is a great approach. What is funny is I never sent him a letter concerning this exact issue, the Bush worker program. This came I assume because I donate to the party and I have let it be known on other occasions how I feel about certain issues. Maybe this was a pre-emptive strike to asssure me all was ok with him, but at least he is paying attention.

Complaining to each other is ok, its just kind of ridiculous to cut off the nose. Fight within the party, not cut and run.

It sure read like an "instead of" to me.

So I must have read it wrong.

gub, everyone knows my opinion on this. Holding his feet to the fire isn't considered acceptable anymore. I would just ruin a fine thread by giving my views.

Good post.

I got a similar but longer letter from Congressman (Dr.) Michael Burgess. In part, it said:

"Immigration continues to be the subject of intense national debate. With 1.5 million immigrants arriving to the United States each year, half of post-1970 immigrants and their U.S.-born children living in or near poverty, and one-third having no health insurance, immigration is creating enormous challenges for our nation's schools, health care system, and physical infrastructure. Whatever one thinks of contemporary immigration, it is critically important to understand that its effect on the United States can have major ramifications. If there is no change in immigration policy, it is almost certain that at least 15 million new legal and illegal immigrants will settle in the United States in this decade alone. Thus immigration's negative impact will continue to grow if current trends are allowed to continue.
I am opposed to an immigration amnesty for those that break the law. The blanket amnesty that went into effect in 1986 only promoted more illegal immigration into this country. Today, with nearly 8-10 million illegal aliens in the United States, the need to improve enforcement of our immigration laws and support provisions that make the legal immigration process viable has reached a critical juncture.
...
"I believe that President Bush has good intentions by bringing this proposal forward. He is to be commended for bringing the immigration issue to the forefront of issues facing our country. I believe, however, that it falls short of achieving the goals of protecting our borders, ensuring the integrity of legal immigration, protecting American jobs, and bestowing the appropriate value on U.S. citizenship.
While not a blanket amnesty, like the amnesty granted in 1986, President Bush's guest worker program ultimately rewards those immigrants who are here illegally. This policy sends the wrong message to American citizens about the value and obligations of U.S. citizenship. It signals to millions of foreigners legally maneuvering their way, through the current American immigration bureaucracy, that American law is devoid of force or meaning.
...
"Additionally, I will work to create an immigration policy that focuses on reducing illegal immigration and places tighter controls on legal immigration. In these uncertain times, we can ill-afford to stand idly by as illegal immigrants continue to stream into this country.

Dear "Normy"

Illigal immigration is wrong. I don't have a solution. I don't have a plan. I wouldn't even mention it if President Bush hadn't brought it up. But his plan won't work.

I am going to shore up the borders and stop illegals before they get into the country. I don't know how. I don't know when. I don't know why I will succeed where others have failed. I'm going to do it.

We must keep America safe.

God bless you and God bless America.

Sincerely,

{insert congressman's name here}

Member of Congress
