Muslims and Arab-Americans to vote against Bush

WASHINGTON: Sixty-eight percent of Arab voters from four important states have said in a poll it is time to elect a president other than George Bush.

This is a major and dramatic shift from the 2000 presidential campaign, when Arab-Americans in Michigan, Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania strongly favoured Bush over his Democratic rival Al Gore.

Most Pakistanis also voted for Bush under the popular and prevalent impression that Republican administrations have been traditionally more sympathetic to Pakistan than India. While this was true during the Cold War when India not only denounced the US-led defence pacts of which Pakistan was a member but had close political, trade and military relations with the former Soviet Union, with the fall of the Soviet Union those old configurations have changed.

Since the US went into Afghanistan and invaded Iraq, Muslim disillusionment with the Bush administration in this country, as well as beyond America, has been widespread. In the wake of 9/11, the Muslim community in the United States has borne the brunt of the heavy-handed, culturally insensitive campaign unleashed in the name of fighting terrorism. The partisan policies followed by the Bush administration in the Middle East and its unquestioning endorsement of almost all Israeli actions against the Palestinians have caused deep resentment among American Muslims against the Republican administration. All these factors have resulted in a general disillusionment with President Bush. Consequently, most Muslims are not going to vote Republican this time when the country votes later this year to elect a new leader.

The four states where the poll was taken are among the top 10 states in terms of Arab-American population, representing a total of 510,000 likely voters. All these states have seen a rapid growth in the size of their Arab-American communities in the last decade. Voter turnout among members of this community is somewhat higher than in the US population as a whole.

Meanwhile, a Bush TV campaign ad that shows a terrorist who looks distinctly Middle Eastern has triggered a great deal of criticism from American-Muslims who have asked for its withdrawal. The new spot entitled “100 Days,” is the first ad to use the image of a dark-skinned man who is obviously meant to be a terrorist.

The slow-motion footage of the 30-second spot at the centre of the controversy has a woman’s voice warning about John Kerry’s agenda, charging, “On the war on terror: weaken the Patriot Act used to arrest terrorists and protect America.” On the left of the screen flash the words “John Kerry’s Plan.” At the bottom, a red box warns, “Weaken Fight Against Terrorists.” On the right side of the screen a plane is shown taking off. At the bottom there is a close-up of a dark, dangerous-looking man who looks around nervously and then turns towards the camera. He is obviously a terrorist whose dark face and features strongly suggest that he is a Middle Easterner. The Bush campaign denies that the man depicted in the TV spot is an Arab but one of its officials conceded that it was a “very generic” image.

According to James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute, the TV ad “undercuts the very thing the President committed himself to after 9/11. It tries to create an identity between terrorists and that face. It can only be called a negative stereotype. It can only be called regrettable.”

This writer in Pakistan would contribute his testicles to a community sperm bank if he thought it would advance his time on the waiting list to get a green card even ten minutes.

All the more reason to halt immigration of Muslims into the United States without a very thorough investigation as to where their loyalties and a long probationary period to prove it. Hopefully, their defection will be more than off-set by the defection of Jewish voters and regular Americans who understand most Muslims are not pro-American.

I think some thread a few weeks back showed Bush getting 30% of the jewish vote, which is not bad considering Gore got 81% as I recall in 2000.

Bush will just keep doing what he is doing. He is hard wiring on this stuff. Voters, Muslims or otherwise, will just have to like it or leave it. And that is how it should be.

Yeah, someone please tell me why the Patriot Act violates my rights. I'm living my life here as an American whose linear goes back to God knows when before the War (I mean the real war So.Vs.No) and I'm not bringing drugs into the US, I'm not committing crimes like raping or robbing banks and such but I'm supposed to be real scared and in an uproar that my civil rights are being violated by the Patriot Act? Come on. If you are complaining about it, then I hope the Gov. is looking at YOU!

100% of the voters in my household feel strongly that it is time to expell all muslims from the US.

Bush has delivered more than 50 million Arab/Muslims from the tyranny of the Taliban and Saddam and given them freedom, yet the Arab-American/Muslims now will vote against Bush?

I don't believe this crap for one minute. I saw the Iraqi Americans dancing in the streets when the American forces moved into Baghdad.

If the pro-terrorist Arabs are going to vote against Bush, that is no surprise. These creeps don't belong on the streets of America to begin with.

youre right - i remember seeing that. the ones who are 'voting against bush' are newcomers who still live in their old country and should be given a one way ticket back. if you dont respect the right of this nation to defend itself, you shouldnt be here.
