JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - A South African man told a court how he hacked to death his interior designer because she criticized his decor, local newspapers reported on Tuesday. Jose da Silva, 37, pleaded guilty to murdering 47-year-old Beatrice Harrowyn in 2001 after inviting her to his new house in a classy suburb north of Johannesburg.
"We went through the house and I told her what I wanted. She did not make any nice comments about my place so I went to my garage and fetched an axe," the Star newspaper reported him as saying.
"I killed her because she reminded me of an old school teacher whom I hated very much."
Da Silva told the Pretoria High Court that voices in his head had instructed him to become a serial killer, the Star said.
He said he wanted to be caught before killing any more people and could not understand why it took police six weeks to catch him after he left clues for them to follow "like Hansel and Gretel."
"It should have taken police two days. It was their job to arrest me. I pay taxes and their salary," the newspaper reported him as saying.
Da Silva is due to be sentenced on Tuesday, newspapers said.
Some people are very senstive about their style and taste.
After he kills a woman because she didn't like his house, he gets all huffy and puffy about how long it took for police to arrest him? There would have been no need for police if this guy weren't such a nut
Another sterling example of humanity right there...
Wonder what his house looked like?
Jose da Silva will be the first subject of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy in South Africa.
Da Silva will be restrained during taping.
Sounds justified to me.
I usually ignore the voices in my head...
This does not surprise me.
Does anyone remember Hildi Santo Tomas's cardboard room? Or the pink one with the hay?
"Slaying Spaces"
There are a couple of interior design oriented cable shows where I swear they are going to end up with axe fights someday.
Sorry, won't happen again, please put that thing down.
I wonder how he'd react to Christopher Lowell.
"So the mauve draperies WEREN'T GOOD ENOUGH...huh?"
A police officer responded: "I didn't like the way he criticized our work. This man did not have one nice thing to say about our sleuthing. He reminded me of one of my neighbors -- so I went and got my axe."
Not to mention that prudence will require that little stainless steel muzzle thing they had on Hopkins [Hannibal] in the Quiet Lambs flic. Whenever he got out of his muzzle things usually got ugly. We really need some shots of da Silva's interior decor to see whether this was a case of justifiable homicide vel non. After all, some of these decorator types just don't know when to back off.
Just damn.
If you want on the list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...
Hmmmm...here's to betting Jose is from Mrs. Kerry's homeland of Mozambique originally.
