What is it with Medved and the immigration issue? (He dumped on a close-the-borders caller today)

Look, I'm a fan of Michael Medved. But it's frustrating how -- in my opinion -- he dances away from illegal immigration issues. Today, for example, he was asking callers who disagree with Iraq policy to suggest alternative ways to fighting terrorism. One guy called in and said, "close the borders" or "police the borders," or something like that. Medved became very agitated and impatient, and essentially said this would be an irrelevant response to the terror threat. Now, no matter what your position on Iraq, how is policing the borders irrelevent to fighting terror? True, only a minority of the 9-11 terrorists were illegals - - but things might have turned out differently if those illegals hadn't been in the country. And we might have fewer threatening "legal" immigrants if we did a better job of policing who gets "legal" status.

Am I off the rails here? Or is it Medved who needs to wake up?

I didn't hear the show so I can't comment specifically. However, most calls like that usually sound like Buchananite nutters.

Good for Medved

So you don't think fighting terror requires a much tougher border policy?

I'll ask you the same thing I asked BushisdeMan:

So you don't think fighting terror requires a much tougher border policy?

Yeah, good for Medved. Borders; we don't need no stinkin' borders, Gringo!

Brilliant insight indeed. Keep up the well-thought out commments.

I'm gonna guess that Medved sees some sort of disconnect between "close the borders" and fighting terrorism, if you take it in a very literal sense.

Would "closing the borders" have stopped any of the Sept. 11th terrorists? Well, literally it wouldn't have, but that's not what you meant when you said it. You also meant enforce all of our immigration laws and eject everyone who has over stayed their Visas.

I'll wager that Medved heard "close the borders" and thought first and foremost about stopping Mexicans, which wouldn't have done anything.

Of course, that's all conjecture.

This is my one main departure from Medved's views. He believes that with regards to the mexican illegal invasion,
we have essentially "lost the war", and that to do anything to address the issue would bring dire "unintended consequences" disastrous to our economy.

He has a very tightly closed mind to the problem.

I like Medved, too, but he's out of touch on this issue. Congressman Kolbe's (AZ) own brother found a diary written in arabic at the AZ/Mexico border.

Its irrelevant because anyone bent on destructing us will find their way in.

Ecxcellent! What right do we have to control who comes here? After all, we took most of the southwest from Mexico by force. How can we legitimately keep them out?

I see where some of these pre-citizens will even get the right to vote. Those people in San Francisco must be very open-minded and generous. We should all strive to be the same, especially considering all the cultural benefits that will come our way.

I have a very bad feeling that we are going to have to suffer another terrorist attack to figure out that controlling our border matters. If I want to keep burglars and bad guys out of my house, I better lock all the doors and windows. If I was to say that since the last time the burglar came in the back door, that is all I had to lock to secure the building, most people would see the common sense of locking the whole place up instead. What I do detect from this administration is political pandering to the Hispanic community, in spite of the pols which show Americans are quite willing to pay more for lettuce (and whatever other items illegals are used to produce) to protect our country.

Medved says that (a) our presednt immigration policy is a failure, (b) it is a fantasy to believe that all present illegals can be rounded up and deported, (c) it is unrealistic to believe we can keep illegals out of the country and (d) the only workable solution is some sort of work permit program to register present illegals and get them out of the underground economy.

Medved is sane, and gets tired of 'put them all on a bus' approaches.

That's all thats up with him.

Hmm.. I don't buy that -- and I wonder if you really do yourself. Consider an analogy. Do you think Sharon's wall is also a useless exercise in keeping people "bent on destruction" out -- because "anyone bent on destroying Isreal will find their way in"?

And the Mexicans took it from the people who were there first by force. I hope I detect a note of sarcasm in your post.

Eisenhower did the put them on the bus routine in the 50's (Operation Wetback was what it was called). It worked fine then and could do so again - with the political will to do so. It would likely cause a revolution in Mexico, which would not be a bad thing in my opinion.

Exactly.

I do think we can keep most of new illegals out, but saying we can just ship away all the ones we have is gounded in fantasy.
