Doris Day chatted with President George W. Bush about their mutual love of dogs when he phoned to congratulate the iconic performer and animal welfare advocate on receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. The Prez told Doris that he's an animal person, and talked about his Scottish terrier Barney and about the critters on his ranch.
And then Day advised the president that he'd get more votes if he'd quit hunting.
She tells us that her sentiments about Bush's hunting won't stop her from voting for him. "I'm pulling for him every step of the way," she makes clear.
Day, who starred with Ronald Reagan in two films, remained friends with the Gipper through his presidency. Like him, she switched from Democrat to staunch Republican - part of a Hollywood social set she recalls including Jimmy and Gloria Stewart, George Burns and Gracie Allen, and Jack and Mary Benny.
She remembers once quizzing Reagan as to what he'd done with his giant sheep dog, Lucky, who had disappeared from the White House. Reagan sent her a photo of Lucky at the wheel of an old red Jeep full of dogs on his California ranch with the message, "Look who's in the driver's seat." She says Reagan's recent death was hard to take.
Day, who turned 80 in April and who does not travel by air, opted to stay home in Carmel when the Medal of Freedom presentations were made Wednesday. Still, she's deeply affected. She broke into tears when talking with us about the honor. "To come from Cincinnati, Ohio, for God's sake, then to go to Hollywood, and to get this kind of a tribute from my country ... I love this country so much ..."
Asked whether she'd ever act again, the top box-office movie actress of her time says, "You never know. It's up to God. If I were meant to, I'd be led to it. I pray about everything that comes to me. That way I don't have any hassles in my mind."

She remained a christian scientist for at least some time after his death and I hadn't heard if she had changed her fatih.
During the week following President Reagan's death I heard Doris Day on the phone being interviewed--Fox, I'm sure--along with Mickey Rooney.
She told the Reagan/dog story: Back during Reagan's presidency, she had been concerned President Reagan had left one of his dogs back at the ranch and she had spoken out about it to Parade Magazine. Doris then recounted that President Reagan himself called her up and said that dog had just not been happy at the WH--no where to run!--and the dog was so very happy at the Ranch where he had all the room he needed, and plenty of staff to make sure he was well cared for. Doris was happy. It's interesting that years have passed that she hasn't been heard from, and now in just a couple weeks I've heard her support President Reagan and now President Bush.

I can't keep them straight. The VIP thing was crazy!
But you all seem to think she only made movies in the '60s. It was the '50s when her star came out big time. Never mind her band-singing in the '40s, including the famous version of "Sentimental Journey".
Much as I like the Hudson/Garner movies, I'll always think primarily of her in musicals w/Gordon McCrae. When "musical" automatically meant "musical *comedy*" - check out "By the Light of the Silvery Moon" and "On Moonlight Bay"!

Next you're gonna try & tell me that what happens in the movies isn't 'real'. I wasn't born yesterday - I know what's real when I see it. DD and RH kissed & smooched - I saw it.
How about stuff I see in print - can I beleive all of it - huh???

I am glad she is voting republican, maybe she is wising up in her old age, but I have heard some pretty liberal tripe come out of her mouth, although right at hand I can't remember what.
You're correct. "VIP" as a product was actually AFTER the fact of coming up w/a great MARKETING SCHEME. The scheme being to tell every1 "it's coming, it's big...." etc and get people excited about buying something ahead of time, even though they had no indication at all what it was. In the time "it's coming", they had to come up w/what product to actually make!
At least, that's *generally* how it played out. I don't recall the details at the start of the movie.
Oh, I remember those! My grandmother had a wonderful wall-length stereo that she played her albums on....(along with Patti Page and Dean Martin). I love her voice. I have her version of "Secret Love", "Fly me to the Moon" and her along with Les Brown doing "September Song" on my music files. She is great!

She doesn't get enough credit for her wonderful singing.
AND she only became a singer when she was in a car accident and hurt her legs. Originally, she was a dancer. She started singing while she was listening to the radio, recuperating. She has many God-given talents.
Makes you wonder how much of that "creative" marketing goes on doesn't it? I love that movie...what a blast!
