Nuclear arms reportedly found in Iraq

BAGHDAD, July 21 (UPI) -- Iraqi security reportedly discovered three missiles carrying nuclear heads concealed in a concrete trench northwest of Baghdad, official sources said Wednesday. The official daily al-Sabah quoted the sources as saying the missiles were discovered in trenches near the city of Tikrit, the hometown of ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. "The three missiles were discovered by chance when the Iraqi security forces captured former Baath party official Khoder al-Douri who revealed during interrogation the location of the missiles saying they carried nuclear heads," the sources said. They pointed out that the missiles were actually discovered in the trenches lying under six meters of concrete and designed in a way to unable sophisticated sensors from discovering nuclear radiation. The sources said al-Douri, who is related to former Vice Chairman of the Iraq Revolution Council and Saddam's right-hand man Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, was captured after Iraqi police intercepted an e-mail message in which he set a meeting with another former Baath official. The report could not be authenticated by the interior ministry or the national security department, but the paper noted Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiar Zibari made a surprise request recently to Mohammed el-Baradei, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, to resume inspections for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

yes, beware of UPI stories in general. Just because news is "good" doesn't make it "true"

If true, I am a little sad because this will pre-empt the Sandy saga and I wanted to hear about his sox a few more days.

Oh well...

What, exactly, is a "nuclear head". That's not a nuclear warhead is it? Is that some kind of depleted uranium penetrating warhead? Call me sceptical at this point.

LOL - you obviously got hold of an early edition. Sadly, it's probably close to the truth.

If this report is confirmed, and that's a big "IF," how long do you suppose it'll be before the Dims start suggesting that these nukes are a "plant" by the Bush team?

Does this have something to do with the Libyian statement that they were the base for Saddam's stuff?

Technical analysis will show the Iraqi designs to be duds, so Bush still lied. < / sarcasm>

I believe the Wash Times said they were under 6 or so meters of concrete so were undetectable.

Not that hard to hide if that is the case. There could be many more.

Iran has already run several stories claiming the US has been planting WMD's. Here's their proof!

Agreed. What is a "nuclear head" by the way? Sounds like they took a report verbatim that was badly translated. For all we know, it could mean they found a nuclear warhead or head cheese...

I'm a bit dubious too. However, I don't think by any stretch depleted uranium heads can accurately be called nuclear. But it certainly is possible that the warheads are dirty bombs - Saddam might have gotten hold of some radioactive material and stuck it on the head of a conventional bomb. Even so, I'd certainly say that qualifies as a WMD.

No. Just ask the NYT. The 30 sarin shells are not WMD.
