Tucson woman poised to head N.R.A.

Sandy Froman believes America's civil rights are not being protected

It's the most powerful pro-gun lobbying organization in the nation and a Tucson woman is poised to become its leader.

In April 2005, the National Rifle Association will swear in Sandy Froman as its president.

Froman will succeed Charlton Heston, the actor-turned-activist whose "from my cold dead hands" anti-gun-control slogan defined his tenure as NRA president. Heston suffers from Alzheimer's disease.

Froman was 30 years old when she picked up her first gun, as a means of self-protection after an attempted home invasion. As president of the N.R.A., Froman plans to address and protect the civil rights of minorities, something she believes has been overlooked in the past.

In an exclusive interview with Fox 11 News, Froman said, "We take our rights for granted and as long as our garbage is pick up once a week we this the world is okay. People don't realize how easy it is to lose our rights."

Froman calls the N.R.A the oldest and largest civil rights organization in America.

"Historically it's been shown that when people who had a right to vote were prevented from going to the polls, they were able to protect themselves from violence and from the people who wanted to do them harm because they had firearms," Froman said.

Ten years ago, Froman was instrumental in passing a law in Arizona allowing people to apply for a permits to carry concealed weapons. Today, more than 67,000 Arizonans have concealed-carry permits.

Froman supports a controversial bill that allows patrons to carry guns into restaurants that serve alcohol.

"I think law-abiding citizens, peaceable people ought to have the same rights as criminals to protect themselves," Froman said.

But Tucson City Council Member Carol West believes America has become a nation of fearful people, too quick to purchase guns for protection.

"I think it's unnecessary. A patron doesn't need to carry a gun into a restaurant. Part of that has been perpetrated by these gun-rights groups who want people to feel afraid," West said.

West hopes to have an opportunity to meet with Froman. One issue she'd like to discuss is ways that parents can keep guns away from kids.

At Pima Pistol, a shooting range north of Tucson, members described their reasons for joining the N.R.A., calling it a hobby as well as a means of self-protection.

"Along with all the safety reasons, and getting young people interested in firearms and teaching them to use them properly, show the good parts about firearms, not always the bad," Gary Szczepamski said.

"As I got more involved in shooting and more worried about my second amendment rights the N.R.A. seemed like the only big lobbying group that cared about my second amendment rights," Debbie Ferns said.

And while Froman doesn't have her own Heston-like trademark phrase just yet – "I haven't thought of one, the wheels are spinning," she said – she's working on one.

"I tell people to join the N.R.A.," she said.

"The roots of gun control are racist"

You might not know how right you are.

It's well known that in Chicago handguns are prohibited1. But 'Da Mare' (the mayor) Richie Daley passed a law (by Regal fiat) that all residents of Public Housing are prohibited from owning and/or possessing any type of firearm - no shotguns, no rifles.

Now this 'law' really only affects (targets) Blacks as they are approx 99.998% of Chi's Public Housing complexes occupants and they are the people that need a means of self-defense the most. Home invasions in the 'projects' are common and these people are now at the mercy of the thugs, gang-bangers and drug dealers thanks to the mayor.

So like you say, Gun Control is racist.
[But the blacks keep voting Dem and refuse to get off the plantation. (metaphorically speaking)]

1- Technically they're not. Some handguns could've been grandfathered in a long time ago, but in reality they are effectively banned.

I was thinking that Tom Selleck would have made a good choice to follow Heston.

He's wealthy, finances and produces his own movies (Westerns now IIRC) and everyone in Holly-weird knows he's a "Right-Wing Gun Nut" anyway so his career wouldn't be harmed.

Plus he has a big imposing figure, is good looking (not in a girlie man way) and could swing a lot of "soccer moms" to our side.

Just a thought....

What about Ted Nugent? He would make a exciting head of the NRA.

Selleck would make a poor choice for President. He was completely blindsided by Rosie O'Donut. He started sputtering that he wasn't a spokesman for the NRA. Unfortunately, he could have realized how much he was being attacked and calmed down. He didn't so don't confuse Selleck with Quigley Down Under.
Any President of the NRA has to be a member of the Board of Directors. Selleck had never held that position.

Doesn't matter if she were black but it might help. I usually am strictly against selecting folks because of their gender/racial profile, but I think having a woman, (as long as she is not the shrill type) makes the civil rights movement more accessible to those that might be influenced by left-wing hate groups.

The black community has historically been the target of gun control laws and today is the group most affected by being held defensless.

An emphasis on "civil rights" whether targeted to blacks or all Americans is politically better promoted.

"Tell that to Suzanne Gratia Hupp."

Dang, you beat me to it; I was going to post that EXACTLY, but thought I'd check first.

BTW, it's "Suzanna" with an 'a.'

It's the end of the world.

Let's hope so.

First the church. Now, the NRA?!?!! And to think I was considering extending my membership. Not anymore. Tsk, tsk, tsk...

By the way, the story is wrong. Kayne Robinson succeeded Charlton Heston. You might recall he's from Iowa. I wonder why he's one-and-gone. Guess I'll have to check the NRA Web site.

I believe Marion P. Hammer the woman that is very active in Florida was President of the NRA just before Charlton Heston.

What do either of you mean?

And you newgeezer...are you honestly suggesting that you won't re-join the NRA because they appointed a woman to this spot?

Nah, I'll probably relent and re-up one of these days. I really like America's First Freedom magazine.

We wouldn't even need an NRA if we didn't have women ruling over men be it in politics, the workplace or our churches. Sure males are ultimately to blame for giving up their God given position, but the irony here just kills me.
