Symantec Download Traffic Jam
9/2/04 | Self/Vanity

Posted on 09/02/2004 11:29:41 AM PDT by ninenot

Last night attempted to download Symantec/NortonAV LiveUpdate fixes and patches in preparation for SP2 loading. There were also some goofy popups from the Norton which are usually fixed with update downloads.

Tried 3 times last evening (9:30 CDT-11:00 CDT) and three times this AM to get the download. Couldn't. The page would not open and the my 'incoming' monitor said that the site was not transmitting.

Maybe they didn't figure all 10 million Windoze users would hit the site at once, huh?

It's easier for me to just reinstall my system.

It's easier for you to reinstall your OS than to download new virus definitions?

Did it this morning. No problems. Perhaps it's not Symantec's problem, eh?

It's easier to reinstall then to download patches.

Something strange happened - after loading SP2 my old HP deskjet stopped working. It still recieves data from the PC, but it just sits there and blinks. It is an old printer, so I may just get a new USB printer rather that screw around with the HP. I'll probably buy another HP, as this one has lasted so long.

I don’t know that it necessarily has anything to do with SP2. Maybe.

I’ve had two HP flatbed scanners and one inkjet printer that all did just that – just stopped working at some point. I’d try updated drivers(?), different cables(?) trying them on another computer (tried them on Win95, NT and XP machines), etc… nothing.

Finally just took out the sawzall and cut them apart to look at whatever was inside then threw them away.

A relative had a similar experience with his HP inkjet printer and claimed that it started working again when he changed ink cartridges (even though the ones that were in it showed to be half-full). That may be fine for a printer but I don’t know what was up with the scanners.

Getting an Epson printer seemed to help in my case.

It's not Live Update--that works fine.

It's the NEW downloaded Live Update s/w package that is a problem.

Norton is a good anti-virus program but there are free ones out there that rate as good if not better at detecting the latest viruses. Avast and AntiVir for example can currently find up 90%+ of them and are updated regularly:

Avast
AntiVir

Symantec's Live Update works fine here. So does the more frequently updated Intelligent Updater. I run it every day, and the Live Update is set to run automatically.

BTW, I downloaded and installed SP2 yesterday. NO problems at all here as far as I can tell. In fact, I noticed a seemingly slight increase in the speed of most of my computing tasks.

Oh...it did take quite a long time - 1 hour+ - to download and install SP2. That has been the only negative for me so far.

Of course, your mileage may vary...

Then don't ever surf. I am serious. New viruses are introduced every day, and if you aren't downloading updates every day, you are exposing yourself and should expect something awful to happen.

I don't use my home computer that much...just once a month for a part time job. I have the full package of Webroot products...SpySweeper, Popup Washer, Window Washer. They seem to work up to a point.

Wow.

Sure glad I don't run Windows.
