It is very easy to see flying saucers or triangles if you are very lonely, a bottle of Jack Daniels in hand and are a deputy sheriff for a small desert county. Notice that the aliens only observe the desert. They never observe cities or the East Coast.

A friend of mine, probably the most down-to-earth person I know, saw one of these years ago - shook him up pretty good. He's convinced it's a secret government craft.
