NELSON, British Columbia - U.S. draft dodgers who fled to Canada are finally getting some recognition - in Canada.
Artists and activists in this picturesque lakeside town have announced plans for a bronze monument and festival to honor them.
"This will mark the courageous legacy of Vietnam War resisters and the Canadians who helped them resettle in this country during that tumultuous era," said Isaac Romano, director of Our Way Home, a celebration set for 2006.
Dennis Klein, a sculptor and teacher at Kootenay School of the Arts, and artist Naomi Lewis have been chosen to make a memorial depicting Canadians embracing the hands of American resisters.
"I've met so many draft resisters over the years and some of them are local peers of mine that are artists and others are a part of the community," Klein said. "It would be nice to honor them and all those that actually took a step toward peace."

If I ever visit the Canadian West, I'll be sure to stop by and vandalize this monument to human excrement.
It would be interesting to know who's paying for this.

It's getting harder and harder to keep the respect I have for Canada. What happened to the Canadians? They used to be a Country one could admire.

So they are commemorating resisters during a tumultuous era? When does the monument honoring Al Sadr and his band of monkeys go up? They are certainly resisters during a tumultuous era. Al Sadr is probably posing for the sculptor right now.
How about this?
We were at Niagara falls in July watching some street juggler. He was being paid by the Parks Commission. As aprt of his act, he described growing up in New Jersey and moving to Canada while "stationed here during the Vietnam war." Stupid moron.
We left.
Canada is a "country" (tell that to Quebec) that hides behind the US defense umbrella, the sacrifices made by our soldiers and taxpayers, and whose "leaders" never miss a chance to spit on, or backstab the US internationally.
We'll hot wire a dozer and crush this tribute to cowards!

Excellent question...it would be so perfectly necessary to mark the event!
Went to the Falls in early August, on the Canadian side (The Canadian side is better, IMO) It's really weird - near the falls you got the hotels and tourist trap stores (Guinness Records). But outside of that the city is very rundown and crumbling.
