it seems to me, i remember some top guy at 60 minutes bragging that he got bill clinton elected (the first time) by editing clinton's 60 minutes interview ("i have made mistakes in my marriage") to make clinton look good.

I know that we have discussed President Bush’s Air Guard service sited by CBS's forged documents but the Air Force Manual that the documents refer to has nothing to do with Flying Boards or meeting Flight Physical Standards. In the 70s the manual that covers these items is AFM 160-1. AFM 160-1 contains the actual schedule and other requirements about these medical exams.

Now Kerry on his web site on 27 Apr 2004 raised the following question:

FACT:
Bush Was Suspended From Flight Duty For Failing To Take Mandated Medical Exam. On September 29, 1972, Bush was officially suspended from flying for missing his annual medical examination. The orders note that Bush’s suspension is authorized under the guidelines presented in Air Force Manual 35-12 Para 2-29m, which reads that Bush’s local commander “will direct an investigation as to why the individual failed to accomplish the medical examination.” [Aeronautical Orders, Number 87, 29 Sept 72; AFM 35-13, Para 2-29m] Where Are the Complete Results of the Required Investigation into Bush’s Absence from the Exam?

We now know that the memo's were completely bogus and the reference to
AFM 35-15 was a ruse by the person that forged the documents to add a touch of realism.

My question is this:
How does the Kerry campaign explain away the fact that they and the CBS memos cite the same bogus Air Force Manual 35-13 without being in contact with each other. Two groups just dreaming up the same non-existent manual goes way beyond coincidence?

"It is obviously against CBS News standards and those of every other reputable news organization to be exposed as being associated with any political agenda," the network said in a statement.

Five years? That's not an investigation -- it's an agenda!!!

CBS Says Producer Violated Policy by Putting Source in Touch With Kerry Aide

Wait just a friggin' minute. NOW cBS is saying they had the source FIRST? Is cBS falling on the sword to protect the DNC? I thought it had been established the DNC had the memos first, then sent them to cBS after they determined the memos were fraudulent. How else could the DNC have incorporated elements mentioned in the memos into some of their campaign ads running long before the memos were released by cBS?

Enquiring minds want to know.

CBS doesn't have a political agenda. Noooo! It's merely following the DNC script.

"It is obviously against CBS News standards and those of every other reputable news organization to be associated with any political agenda," the network said in a statement. "

So Mapes violated ethical standards of journalism when she called the Kerry campaign. She violated "OBVIOUS" ethical standards. And she knew she was violating the standards.

It is therefore within the realm of possibility, since she knowingly violated the standards once when she called the Kerry campaign, that she would violate them further by colluding in an even more egregious and in depth way with the Kerry campaign on a story about Bush because she is a liberal and she WANTED to damage him. There is no proof of a deeper collusion but it is not unreasonable to expect Mapes to be fired because her credibility is destroyed.

Remember the Dem smear that Bush was responsible for this crime?...Well look who was also involved in this escapade...

"A CBS producer who has refused to turn over transcripts of a videotaped interview with a defendant in the Texas dragging death case is free this weekend after posting a $2,000 bond, said a CBS spokeswoman.

The transcripts are of an interview CBS conducted with Shawn Allen Berry, the third of three defendants to be tried in the death of James Byrd Jr., who was dragged to his death in Jasper, Texas, on June 7, 1998.

CBS producer Mary Mapes, who lives in Texas and produced the interview with Berry, was ordered to hand over the videotapes Tuesday. Mapes said she did not have the tapes, and a Texas judge then issued a subpeona for CBS in New York to hand over the tapes. The judge also instructed Mapes to present herself at the prison on Friday, where, if she did not hand... "

The Abu Ghraib scandal was one of several exclusives for Ms. Mapes, who began working for the news division in 1989, mostly as a producer for "The CBS Evening News." In 1999, she secured for Mr. Rather an interview with Shawn Allen Berry, a white man who was convicted in the racially motivated killing of James Byrd Jr., whom Mr. Berry and two others dragged behind a pick-up truck near Jasper, Tex. Ms. Mapes nearly went to jail for refusing to hand over tapes of the interview to prosecutors. She also secured a major interview with Hillary Rodham Clinton after President Bill Clinton faced impeachment proceedings.

So basically, every report the "highly regarded" Mary Mapes has done has either bashed Bush, or supported Clinton. No, she has no agenda, right?

mapes didn't put this clown in "touch" with the kerry campaign, he IS with the KERRY CAMPAIGN to begin with. HE got CBS to put on the 'forutnate son' show FOR KERRY.

the idea that a democrat activist, had to get help from CBS to let kerry look at his documents?

ridiculous..
they are all in it together.
no meetings were arranged, they were planned from the get go... and KERRY is in this up to his botoxed eyebrows.

Some colleagues expressed worry that Ms. Mapes would be a scapegoat and that others, like Mr. Rather; Betsy West, a CBS News senior vice president; and the CBS News president, Andrew Heyward, would not be held accountable.

I don't believe it!

Not with the unbiased conviction held by Dan rather, 60 minutes, and executives of CBS!

I can't comprehend the idea that they would destroy the livelihood of such a "behind the scenes" scrapper that only wants to make a living and just enjoy a life in modest comfort. /sarcasm

Her reputation was burnished in the spring, after the Wednesday edition of "60 Minutes," then called "60 Minutes II," reported in detail the abuses at the Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad, Iraq.

Now executives at the news division say that high regard may have poked a fatal hole in its checking procedures, perhaps making some news executives less vigilant in asking hard questions about how the producer obtained documents.

Well, that explains why the CBS bigwigs let her and Danny run with the story so long -- Abu Ghraib was a large feather in Mapes' cap.

But Mapes is not a fool. She lives in Dallas, and has got to be very familiar with the Texas Democratic party landscape. She's been after the TANG story for years, knew who Burkett was, as does anyone who follows politics, and had to be well aware of his eccentricities (and that's a euphemism).

The only way Mapes and Rather would use Burkett as a fall guy is if they had a source they considered reliable to vouch for the docs -- a source that needed a cover.

Burkett is bonkers, but he is exactly the kind of tin-foil whacko that would go along with anonymous phone calls and document drops at a cattle auction -- in fact, the James Bond feel of the whole thing was probably the high point of his life. I can also see him burning the originals , as he was most likely instructed to do by his anonymous contact -- not necessary, but just an added thrill for for demented old Bill.

The lawsuit and and subsequent lawyering up was also planned by Burkett's handlers to silence him in the event Rather had to give up his identity.

The whole whacky story was a setup to hide the identity of the real source, who is someone both Mapes and Rather trusted -- someone so wholeheartedly trusted that they were blinded to the objections of document experts and a host of other players.

There really is no other logical explanation.
