NEW ORLEANS - Twenty-nine illegal immigrants who were working or trying to get a job at Northrop Grumman Corporation's shipyard in Avondale have been arrested as part of a criminal investigation that began earlier this year.
The charges made against them include using fraudulent documents and making false statements to gain employment, falsely claiming U.S. citizenship and illegally re-entering the country after being deported.
Most of the illegals are from Mexico.
An investigation into subcontractors operating at the shipyard is being conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement - the investigative arm of the Homeland Security Department - and the Defense Criminal Investigative Service of the U.S. Defense Department.
ICE's area deputy special agent in charge, Kyle Barnett, says it's important to find out if people working at the shipyard are who they say they are for the sake of national security. He says there's no reason to believe national security has been breached at this point, but the investigation is ongoing.
The shipyard is building four amphibious assault ships for the navy.
Officials say none of the people arrested worked for Northrop Grumman. They were contract labor.
Under federal law, employers who knowingly hire or refer unauthorized workers to a place of employment face criminal prosecution and substantial fines.

So much for JFK's Claims that nothing was being done about illegals
I would like to know if they voted?
I think the feds are listening to the people now.
No, just look at the borders. The feds are still thumbing their noses at the people.

"Under federal law, employers who knowingly hire or refer unauthorized workers to a place of employment face criminal prosecution and substantial fines".
Employers will say that they cannot tell a legitimate document from a fraudulent one. They will also say they are not immigration agents and it's not their responsibility.
I don't often read about employers being prosecuted or fined for hiring ineligible workers.
Makes it all neat and tidy doesn't it?
Well, enforcement is down about 99% since 1990. This is about the sixth story I've posted on illegals working for military/defense contractors.
Check out CNN and get the transcript for Lou Dobb's program that aired tonight. He was talking about illegal immigrant arrests.
There will also be a "special report" on immigration on his program Monday and I think he mentioned something about Easton, PA.
Easton PA is where the judge complemented the illegals for ID theft because they used the SS# to get jobs. I guess his ID was never stolen.
