His job is to oppose tyrants and dictators and mass murderes. Not smile with them.

Who says the two are mutually exclusive?

I sure hope the free trade crowd are correct

Correct about what? You give them far too much credit; thinking that they somehow have a grand strategy to eliminate a Chinese threat by empowering them.

Sure, that's what they've said. In reality, the generation of Americans currently in charge of both government and business is far more concerned with lining their pockets than anything else; even if it means that future generations may have to fight an enemy that we have created. Of course, most of them are too dim to realize what they are doing; and none of them (apparently) own a history book.

There's no way to contain kimchi. Kindly pass the Tums please.

P.S. Hi Karl, where's our old Storm Track thread? It was raining cats and dogs here - windows cleaned for free.

"Keep your friends close..."

And I believe it was Nixon who said: "Keep you enemies in FRONT of you."

Unfortunately, the three subjects which fire up folks here the most are free trade, immigration and Wal-mart (ignoring sinkspur and landoftheirish). I think some of the finest brains around are chatting here, but AT TIMES it gets rough.
(Remind me to tell the story of why I quit my school teaching job and enlisted in the Army '69)
China I see as a threat which given the natural energy of the Chinese people could change the world.

Okay, you were responding to FairOpinion, but WHAT in the world are you talking about?

You must think Bush is the stupidest person on the planet.

That makes no sense. I can't figure out how you got to that comment from FairOpinion's post.

For the record, I agree with FairOpinion. It is diplomacy and China matters alot in this case.

If China says, "Oh, we think we're going to buy some south American debt this time around..." things could get very ugly very quickly.

All of the reasons mentioned are exactly the answer. A 'Grip & Grin' is SOP in the world of statesmanship. At the very least we can be somewhat asured that the best interests of the USA are being brought to the table.
