Morford: Very, Very Dirty Pictures
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Friday, December 3, 2004 | Mark Morford; the Marboro Man gets her hot

Posted on 12/03/2004 7:37:58 AM PST by presidio9

This is what you won't see in the paper. This is what you won't see on CNN or on MSNBC or CBS News or on any major media Web site anywhere and especially no goddamn way ever in hell will you see it within a thousand miles of Fox News.

You aren't supposed to see. You aren't supposed to know. You are to remain ignorant and shielded, and, if you're like most Americans, you have been very carefully conditioned to think Bush's nasty Iraq war is merely this ugly little firecracker-like thing happening way, way over there, carefully orchestrated and somewhat messy and maybe a little bloody but mostly still patriotic and good and necessary and sponsored by none other than God his own angry Republican self.

(snip)

Or maybe you think war is manly and heroic and cool, as exemplified by that now-famous shot of that macho "Dogface" Marlboro-smokin' Marine whose dirt-encrusted mug was eagerly picked up by newspapers and media Web sites across the nation (including this one), and he became an instant icon for the war and the military was positively giddy about using him an ideal recruitment tool, a model of how to make soldiers look all studly and rugged and badass as opposed to the often poorly educated, disposable hunks of politically abused postpubescent meat

So then. Here is your uncensored truth: fallujahinpictures.com. Real pictures from Fallujah. Real pictures of war. Brutal and explicit and shocking and just one site of many. Be warned: this is very graphic content. Horrific and deeply disturbing. No censorship. No suppression. No Photoshop. No bogus shots of happy Iraqi children running in the streets begging for candy from American soldiers. No night shots of Marines in bitchin' night-vision goggles bustin' down the door of some palace and then cheering.

Lean about how she won "Best Online Columnist" award for 2003 from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, among other things.

Right!

We never see those pictures. Because the US is evil and somehow deserved it, in the sick, twisted minds of these types . . .

It's amazing how red-eye in a photo makes the subject look weird.

I suggest no one waste their time seeing those pictures. Pretty dissapointing. Typical pictures from a war zone. Nothing especially horrifying. Nothing near as bad as watching and listening as a man begs for his life, then has his head cut off as he howls in pain and horror, not even close..

My reply stated the following--

Hi Mark--

Just viewed many of the pictures of the casualties of war you had linked. Maybe I can provide some inside scoop for you:

War usually involves some violence. Even when you believe you are existing in a state of bliss, harmony, and head-in-the-sand avoidance---your enemies are constantly scheming, plotting and executing operations to do you harm. Sept 11 could be classified as something like that. Human history is replete with the use of violence, mostly indiscriminately applied. No one works as hard as Americans to limit violence on the innocent--but it can happen. We even employ lawyers and ethicists in the application of force, and try to employ specific weapons to minimize harm to innocent life.

In any real war things break, your people and the enemy are split open, and heads violently shatter, revealing the contents. Hopefully you will never be personally exposed to these things.

Because fortunately Mark, there are better men than you. Men who fear, but unlike you, step forward anyway.

Good day and a good life,

Pete Tare
(son serving in Army, not presently in Iraq)

Or, must truly hate themselves for living the good life in America but being too cowardly to help others in less fortunate countries.

If we had a form of national service with various options the vast majority of these opinions would be tempered by reality instead of fueled by idealism.

War is hell.
Even, "ugly little firecracker-like thing happening way, way over there, carefully orchestrated and somewhat messy and maybe a little bloody but mostly still patriotic and good and necessary and sponsored by none other than God his own angry Republican self", war.

If you don't believe it, Markie, try joining one.

(Note: talking to morford, not you, presidio)

Morford apparently thinks that no civilians were killed in Clinton's Kosovo war; he ran no photo montages back then.

Morford conveniently forgets it was Democratic presidents who dropped the atomic bombs and authorized saturation bombing of civilian areas in Tokyo, Dresden, and other cities.
