The Brooklyn Park man killed early Tuesday in a Minneapolis apartment had up to 26 wounds from being shot in a botched deal to sell ecstasy, according to a criminal complaint filed Thursday.

James A. Barnett, also known as James A. Benett and Charles "Spanky" Barnett, was found dead about 1:30 a.m. in a building in the 2400 block of Golden Valley Rd. in the Willard-Hay neighborhood.

Thomas D. Clair was charged Thursday with second-degree murder and second-degree assault and is being held in the Hennepin County jail without bail.

Clair told investigators that he set up the buy between a man he referred to as "Chris" and Barnett. Clair, 23, said that it was Barnett who first pulled a gun and that Clair was shot during a struggle for the weapon.

Why would anyone shoot a murder victim?

I'll be impressed as all heck if it turns out a revolver was the weapon.

It must have been a John Wayne special that didn't need reloading.

A real life "Fanner 50", so he's still got 24 shots left.

"Hey, I tell you what I'm going to do, snakes. I'm gonna give you to the count of ten to get your ugly, no good, yellow keister off my property before I pump your guts full of lead."

"All right, Johnny. I'm sorry. I'm going."

"One ... two ... ten!"

I was in a shoot-out in Mexico once in a room no bigger than 15x15. There were five of us. My brother and I against two Mexican Federales and one of thier madrinas. Everyone except my brother in law was hit. I had to get back across the border to the US bleeding in my brother in law's brand new Honda Prelude with leather interior. Have not set foot in Mexico since.

I'll be impressed as all heck if it turns out a revolver was the weapon.

Years ago, I was a juror in a second-degree murder trial. The shooting took place in a crack house, with the accused and the victim each being shot at least eight times.

Both men were using small, 5-shot .38 revolvers - and according to the evidence gathered, they'd each emptied their respective handguns twice and were attempting yet another reload when the victim finally keeled-over.

Pictures of the scene showed live cartridges and empty brass all over the floor; the cylinder of the victim's revolver was open, too.

The guy on trial survived to face trial (I wonder how he's enjoying that life sentence at Angola?...) by sheer luck.

Reminds me of a recent New Yorker cartoon: two gangsters riding in the back seat of a car, one says to the other "Why don't we ever hear about a drug deal that went horribly, horribly right?"

No, it was just a house in Acuna. It was supposed to be a weed deal, we brought the money, they brought nothing but intentions of killing us for it.
