Staples Shuns Sinclair News
By John Eggerton -- Broadcasting & Cable, 1/4/2005 4:44:00 PM
Office supply products chain Staples confirms that it is pulling its advertising from newscasts on Sinclair Broadcast Group TV stations as of Jan. 10.
Anti-consolidation activist group Media Matters for America was trumpeting the move, attributing it to its campaign against the broadcaster.
According to the e-mail, Staples said: "As a result of Staples' ongoing review of its advertising media activity, Staples will no longer be airing advertising on any Sinclair stations' news programs as of Jan 10, 2005."
Media Matters, with assists from MoveOn.org, MediaChannel and other consolidation foes, launched the SinclairAction.com Web site last month, in part to drum up e-mails to advertisers. The group says it generated over 36,000 e-mails to Staples. Staples spokesman Owen Davis would not say why the company pulled the ads, beyond saying that it was in response to customers who expressed concerns, "some of which may have been aware of the Media Matters campaign."
Davis said national advertising will continue to air in other dayparts on Sinclair stations. He did not know how many of Sinclair's 62 stations were affected or how much the total buy constituted.
The campaign aims to spur action against Sinclair Broadcast Group's 62 television stations for what Media Matters says is "systematically promot[ing] partisan political interests." Of particular concern is a nightly "news and commentary" segment, "The Point," by Sinclair VP Mark Hyman, as well as Sinclair's airing before the election of parts of an anti-Kerry documentary.
Hyman had no comment at press time.
I'd just let these little losers go on thinking that they have some important victory. I don't really care about Staples as a company. They don't even exist near me. But the bragging my some commie symps don't match up to the words from Staples. I wouldn't want to see our side overreact to something this stupid. Staples could be a communist front group for all I know but it certaintly doesn't appear to have exactly bent over and lubed on this one. Just my observations.
I could be wrong, so be gentle.
So they did a protest against something that never happened.
For those who weren't able to see it, Sinclair ended up running a news show that only had a couple minute clip from "Stolen Honor". Our verdict was that the show was at best neutral to Kerry, slightly even favoring him. Compared to the pre show hype, it was a definite cave in to the libs. So they're basically complaining about a victory for their side.
Glad to hear this! Now I won't spend another penny at Staples.
Call your local Staples, and their national HQ and explain why you won't be shopping there anymore.
Picket signs, anyone?
From what I read in the WastingPost article, (BLEEPING registration might be required), they're only pulling ads from a single segment of news programs.
"...no longer will advertise during news programs, which include "The Point," a daily conservative commentary by Sinclair Vice President Mark E. Hyman."
Big whoop-de-doo.
Also, from the same article, "Staples, which has 1,400 stores, will continue to buy advertising during other programs on Sinclair's 62 stations".
Hey if I was into boycotts, I wouldn't buy stuff from Staples because of Bishop Romney's involvement (people who know me, know how I mistrust and despise the M-words).
Staples has good stuff cheap. Their inkjet, paper, and other computer related office supplies and equipment beat the pants off my local MicroCenter.
So don't go cutting off you nose to spite your face.
I'm in. Just sent Staples an e-mail telling them I'll be returning several items and they won't be seeing me or my friends again.

Staples Pulls Ads From Sinclair Broadcast Group
Even though Sinclair Broadcast Group canceled its plan to air the documentary "Stolen Honor," not-so-tolerant "liberals" have pressured Staples Inc. to yank its ads from the stations' news programs.
The office-supplies chain said "the decision was fueled in part by e-mails from customers angry at what they consider to be the broadcaster's right-wing bias in news and commentary," the Washington Post reported today.
Indeed? So does that mean if enough people complain to Staples about the left-wing bias in news and commentary at CBS, ABC, the New York Times, the Washington Post (etc., etc., etc.) that it will pull ads from them?
Perhaps if enough people contact Staples it will end its snub of Sinclair.
Note: Other Sinclair advertisers that John Kerry's fans have targeted, according to the Post: Kraft Foods Inc., Target Corp., Geico Corp., McDonald's Corp. and Sprint Corp.
Another reminder of Staple's email form:

"When are these idiots going to learn that taking overtly political actions is going to cost them customers?"
I'm glad so many of them do make their politics known. It makes keeping the spending of my hard-earned dollars in line with my values all the easier! :)
Thanks for the notification: Staples is not longer a staple around here...
I'll let them know too.
Isn't Media Matters David Brock's group?
Two steps down... Socially and Morally...
Please explain.
I know about their "sustainability" award.
That was beautiful!
Has anyone else had problems with rebates from Staples for Christmas Gifts purchased last year?
The Saturday after Thanksgiving, our DIL bought a Nikon Digital camera and an Epson Photo Printer. She was to have received a $100 rebate for the combined purchase.
She has received nothing but lies and road blocks to receiving her rebate and has spent a few hours with no results.
If anyone else has had this problem of stone walling rebates from Staples, please freepmail me.
Thanks.
I boycott boycotts...
PING!!!!
GOTO Best Buy and/or Office Depot.
This one is different. If Staples is boycotting Sinclair, I may boycott Staples. Sort of a boycott boycotting. I have to think about it.
Thanks. Just sent them my regards as well. A polite note to let them know I will take my business elsewhere and my COmpany will as well.
hmmmm....
ok for future ones, I will ping with ??? after it.....
I decided I can't Boycott Satples because I've only ever been there once. I will continue to not go there.
