Californians Dreaming of Secession?
CNSNEWS.com ^ | 1/11/05 | Susan Jones

(CNSNews.com) - California could cut taxes, fully fund education and balance its budget by seceding from the United States, a newly organized group says.

The Committee to Explore California Secession, also known as Move On California, says it hopes to bring people together to consider the merits of an autonomous and independent California.

Those benefits would be both financial and political: "For every dollar Californians give to the federal government we see only 78-cents come back," the group's website says. It also expresses concern about "the diminishing voice of Californians in national politics" and "national trends that are tipping the balance in the direction of the religious conservative agenda."

[Contrary to what Move On California claims, California Republicans now chair six U.S. House committees, giving California more congressional clout than any other state, Fox News reported.]

Jeff Morrissette, the founder of Move On California, says the secession buzz began shortly after the November 2004 re-election of President Bush. But, he says, politicians from both parties object to subsidizing other states at a time "when those California tax dollars could be better spent at home to shore up our own fiscal problems."

According to Morrissette, if Californians could control the $40 billion that goes to pork barrel spending projects in other states every year, they could give state taxpayers a $20-billion tax cut and still have enough money to fully fund California spending priorities, specifically education, and balance the budget at the same time.

Morrissette says momentum is building for the California secession movement. "While secession may be a long-shot," he says, "it will succeed in bringing awareness to many of the grievances California has politically, socially and fiscally."

"Californians are getting pushed around and it's time we pushed back," he said.

Perhaps this time we will be smarter and just let them go away.

Thats what gets me about the BS the MSM is pushing on us with this BS-RS crap. They are dividing this country and the blue states are actually colored red on the county maps, while even in red states almost half of the people are humanists who would vote for Lew C. Fere for President.

Its those big cities against the rest of the country.

I for one don't want another socialist country on our border. All of the socialists in CA can emigrate and infest any number of existent squalid "workers paradises" but they can't have one of our states.

I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer but even to me this seems obvious folley. I've just been reading how one city- San Diego- is hopelessly in debt owing far more than 1.2 billion dollars that is due very shortly. In addition they are trying to float a short-term loan for something over 500 million to finish a sewer project that the EPA is ready to fine them over if they don't finish it. The list of their debts goes on and on. The rest of California is in similar or worse shape.

Actually, now that I think about it, see ya' California- don't let the door hit ya' in the a.....

The only problem with that otherwise magnificent scenario is loss of Naval bases.

Last time I checked the current miltary we have belongs to the United States of America.

And I would highly doubt that everyone of those Marines was born and raised in California.

Might want to learn how to take a joke.

I volunteer to lobby the Texas Legislature, and our Congressional Delegation so that they will not oppose this move by California. Further I will throw a party for Houston area FReepers as soon as California is gone.

Ok Ok lighten up already people.

It wasn't a meant as a joke to current miltary personelle in California.

Those miltary members last time I checked swore allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.

I was talking about some future miltary force that would have to raised from the citizens of California.

After the Northeast gets through with California (if California were to secede) there would not be anything left to have. Think Sherman, Sheridan, et al.

They better hurry up if they want to secede from the US, they will be Mexico in another year or two.

They better get a plan B ready.

Plan A: Secede from the US.
Plan B: Secede from Mexico.

Best of luck.

we'll excuse your ignorance, but the most decorated infantry division, the First Marine Division of the United States Marine Corps is based at Camp Pendleton which FYI is in the Golden State of California.

Thats all fine and dandy, but they are members of the United States Military. If California seccedes, then those military members are relocated back to the United States.

Seems the Framers knew what they were doing when they left out any Constitutional mechanism for secession. Of course, that could be solved by amendment.

The absence of an explicit right to secede in the Constitution does not prohibit it. The right to secede is a right "retained by the people" not to be abridged under the 9th Amendment. Indeed, it is the basis of our Declaration of Independence.

It would probably look even worse for Blue Nation if it were broken down at the precinct level.
