Baseball Players and Owners Plan to Announce New Steroid Agreement Thursday

NEW YORK (AP) - Baseball players and owners have reached a new agreement on steroid testing and plan to announce it Thursday, The Associated Press has learned.

The sides have spent the past month negotiating the deal after the union's executive board gave its staff approval to pursue an agreement. Baseball and union officials were preparing an announcement, and commissioner Bud Selig and union executives intended to discuss the agreement Thursday after an owners' meeting in Scottsdale, Ariz., players said.

"I'm glad we could come to an agreement that was mutually agreeable and the right thing to do," said Chicago Cubs pitcher Mike Remlinger, who was briefed on the deal Wednesday. "It was the right thing to do. I think it was something that needed to be done, and I think players understand it needed to be addressed."

The agreement will include penalties for first-time offenders, one AL player said, on condition of anonymity. Other details, such as the frequency of tests, were not immediately available.

"I think it's going to entail more testing, some out-season testing, yes, more in-season random testing and stiffer penalties," said New York Mets pitcher Tom Glavine, a senior member of the union.

And you think that Pujols doesn't use 'roids? Get real. The numbers of users in baseball are staggering. It will all likely come out in the next year or so, and look for Luis right up there with the rest of them.

To answer your question, based on 20 years of living in gyms full of steriod rats, No. We'll find out who's right in a year. Pujols has one of the best swings in history, about his only flaw is he is naturally fat, and battles weight each year. I weigh 180 and can hit a softball 340 feet, and I'm not even considered a HR hitter in the competitive leagues. Luis has 60 pounds on me, and at 240 pounds, his beefy check swing will put a ball out of most of today's 300 foot little league sized parks. His skills for his first 4 seasons are somthing most Hall of Fame players can only dream they had at his age. Check the stats at baseball-reference dot com if you're not familiar.

IF I hear "He now has a personal trainer", or "he's learned proper nutrition" again, I'll gag. Tiger Woods, Terrel Owens....heck half of the USC football team was not on the up & up.

Go to Cooperstown, look at "the Babe's" actual life-size statue along with the bat he used.

Now there was a big, strong guy that could obviously crush the ball.

Baseball simply could not wait any longer for the next "real" Babe to come along.

So, they let "roids" do it for them.

It is all so phony and all so about filthy lucre.

Those of us who saw him in HS and community college in KC know that he hasn't changed much in size or appearance since then.

If he's on the juice, it's well hidden. Contrast that Barry BOnds' vast body changes over the last 10 years.

I think you are, sadly, correct. Baseball has too much to lose to let the whole thing come crashing down. The thing that will be instructive is to see how many Lyle Alzado situations start arising among juiced players as they retire.

Ironically, Bonds, Sosa and Magwire will all be voted into the Hall of Fame,

And Pete Rose won't, even though what they did was just as bad (or worse).

Well, if Pujols was 245 pounds in high school, I would be surprised. But regardless, there are all kinds of different anabolic steroids and HGH derivatives that professional athletes are using. Some bring about dramatic noticeable physical changes and some are more subtle. The effect also varies depending on each player's chemical makeup and how their body reacts to this stuff as opposed to how some other guy's body reacts to it. That's one of the reasons why some guys immediately start getting injured once they go on the juice, and other guys, like Bonds, don't.

What a coincidence. That the new lege will be able to start offering up new bills by next week. Anyone think that Mcains threat has anything to do with the timing of this release?

I long for a return to sports as they were meant to be and a move away from the ESPN-era sports made for those with an attention span of two seconds.

Raise the pitcher's mound in baseball go back to 1968 baseball when Bob Gibson had a 1.12 ERA.

NFL-let the defensive backs get physical with the WRs again. Football has become more like basketball.

NBA take the mauling and physical play out. Basketball has become too much like football. It is sad when there's more contact allowed on an NBA court than an NFL defensive backfield. I wish they'd outlaw the dunk also. There was only one Julius Erving.

College basketball-get rid of the shot clock, 3-point shot and shot clock along with dunk. The clash of contrasting styles and the impact of coaching set the college game apart. Of course that won't play on Sportscenter.

Hockey-melt the ice in the USA and let hockey go back to what is was meant to be-a regional game for Canadians and northern-tier Americans. Who needs hockey in the South?

Don't forget a salary cap for baseball either.

I forgot about the salary cap. That might be the biggest turnoff of all for baseball. Let's forget about all the teams except the Red Sox, Yankees and a rotating token NL opponent.
