Tobacco spit catches truck thief

A US man who stole a lorry was arrested after he choked on the truck driver's tobacco spit which he mistook for a drink.

The 26-year-old man stole the lorry, which had been left with the engine running, from a shopping centre in Vancouver, Washington.

He mistook the absent driver's tobacco-spit cup for a soft drink and took a swig, reports the Columbian.

The thief started choking and had to stop and call 911 for medical help, according to a Vancouver police department report.

Meanwhile, the driver, who had left the truck to wash his hands, had returned to see someone driving off and called police who quickly caught up with the man.

Good thing for the burglar that the driver didn't use the cup to relieve himself during long drives. Eewwwwww.

I must admit, I came close one time to doing the same thing (no, not stealing a lorry). Thankfully I caught myself just in time.

It would be nasty as hell and I would puke, but why did he call 911?

OMG, this is so disgusting. My son-in-law spits his into soda bottles and leaves them all over the place. I always worry one of my grandsons will get ahold of it and do the same. GAG.

"but why did he call 911?"

If he took a big swig, he probably thought and felt like he was dying.

I've awoken after many a fraternity party and nearly taken a big swig of a drink where someone had put out their cigarette. Thankfully you get that slight whif of dirty smoke right before you take a drink. I guess it would be my own fault for not being able to see straight even 12 hours after a party ended.

I had a friend years ago who dipped Skoal. His spit can was always a Mt. Dew can, and it was discernable because his "spitter" would have the little pull tab removed from the top. This was after they had done away with the tab that removed itself completely from the can.

This guy consumed a lot of Mt. Dew as well, and often would leave a can of it sitting near wherever he happened to be at the time. On one particular evening, he did NOT pull the "tab" off of his spit can. He left the room, and when he returned his wife was on the floor, on her hands and knees, quite ill. She also liked Mt. Dew, and noticing that the tab was ON this can, she took herself a big ole drink!

Needless to say, he lost his "in the house" dipping privileges, and we all teased his wife (but not TOO much) about her new "taste" in soft drinks. :-)

Maybe he read this beforehand.
Nicotine is found in cigars, cigarettes, cigarette butts, chewing tobacco (including spit from chewing tobacco), and nicotine gum or patches. Nicotine is a poison. Symptoms have been seen in children who have chewed as little as one-half piece of nicotine gum or bitten into one nicotine patch. Eating one or more cigarettes, three or more cigarette butts, or more than one pinch of snuff is considered potentially toxic or poisonous to children. Infants are especially sensitive to nicotine.

Symptoms usually begin within 30 to 90 minutes. If in liquid form (for example the spit from a chewing tobacco user) or gum form, symptoms may appear as soon as 15 to 30 minutes.

Dizziness, nausea or vomiting, stomach pain, weakness and increased drooling are symptoms of nicotine poisoning. Children can suffer abnormal blood pressure or heartbeat, slowed or interrupted breathing, general sluggishness, seizures and coma. Cats and dogs will show the same effects as children when exposed.

My son, and future son-in-law spit in soda bottles...WITH SCREW ON CAPS. If they ever leave one of those around, I cut them off at the knees.

Hubby and I drink out of cans, just to be sure.

I've seen this happen before back in college. Although it did cause an immediate violent expectoration, it did not require 911. It also provided an excellent story that has stood the test of time whenever told.

Going to their house grosses me out, they are everywhere. I just sent them that article. Maybe he'll keep them out of sight and away from the kids.

Even if it was a soda, who would drink after a stranger?

This is a case of instant karma.

I agree. Growing up in Eastern NC in the 60's and 70's I invariably worked in the tobacco fields. And, like most of my friends, tried chewing tobacco. That one big wad of Red Man made me soooooooooooooooo sick that I've never put chew, dip, snuff, in my mouth since.
Just seeing spit bottles, etc. makes me want to hurl.
