I still want to know why the commies get to be blue and the decent Americans are red.

I like the color red. I don't mind taking it back from the commies.

Others have thought it simply a naïve attempt to avoid trafficking in stereotypes (Democrats are Reds, or socialists).

That explanation, in my opinion, comes the closest to explaining the GOP = red / Dem = blue orthodoxy. The Democrats were scared to death (not without reason) of being perceived by voters as socialists. So, I have no doubt that they quietly lobbied the media to make them the "true blue" party.

So the GOP lucked into the "best" color. I say "best" simply because it is far more visible. Red tends to jump out at the viewer, whether in print or on the screen. Drive by a shopping center at night, and note how much more prominent a red neon sign seems than a blue one of equal size and intensity -- that is, if you can find a blue sign; they're rare, because marketing people know they tend to get overlooked.

Turns out a good way to get folks moving in Waco, Neb., is to introduce yourself as a reporter from Washington, D.C.

*snicker*

This writer hasn't got a clue

Plus those Red Counties that went for Bush .. they weren't just in the mid west

I wondered if all this sameness created a pressure to conform to prevailing political views.

You would think he would wonder about the sameness of his DC diversity crowd who voted 10-1 for a traitor, war crimnal and rich woman's toy boy.

Yet all he does is lament the fact that Kerry didn't do enough to reach these flyover people. Kerry knew it would by impossible to fool people tied so close to their land, so instead concentrated his efforts on fooling soccer moms in Ohio and ginning up voter fraud in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan.

Good post on the Red/Blue history. It deserves it's own thread.

I'd like to see the colors changed to correctly reflect voters leanings.

(sarcasm on) So time magazine, with its red boarder, is a republican leaning magazine? (sarcasm off)

This was a beautifully written piece and I'm a sucker for good writing so I read it through.

The point the writer was making was that if Kerry had bothered to campaign in the red states, had spent the massive amounts of money instead of having all those funds left over after the election, all those Bush voters (who were ambivalent about Bush and basically only voted for him because they were not exposed to the far more compelling Kerry vision) in the "red states" were "persuadable" and would have participated in a putative Kerry landslide.

I suppose this is a fascinating new thesis: Kerry lost because he didn't make a priority of spending money in the red states.

I don't think we're allowed to post unexcerpted Washington Post articles as in #4.
