WASHINGTON -- The Senate's Democratic leader said Sunday that Republicans ''would rue the day'' if they try to make it harder for Democrats to stall judicial nominees who could not get a vote last year.
But Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) said he hoped a new ''optimistic'' climate would take hold now that Nevada Sen. Harry Reid is the top Democrat, succeeding the defeated Tom Daschle of South Dakota, whom the GOP labeled an obstructionist.
''I think everybody wants to be more reasonable,'' Frist said. ''The American people deserve it.''
Nonetheless, Frist did not back away from threats to impose a drastic rule change that could eliminate the effectiveness of the Senate opposition's main delaying tactic, the filibuster, if the Democrats were to refuse to let the full Senate vote on President Bush's judicial nominees.
Reid compared Bush's talk of crisis in judicial nominations to the president's rhetoric on Social Security. ''He's trying to create crisis with judges and with Social Security. They don't exist,'' he said.
We have an unrepeatable chance to name true conservatives where we need them. We must exploit the present occasion! The "nuclear option", now!
We have had our share of rueing, during the CLinton Administration, prior to the Republican takeover of the Congres. It's tiem for the DUMMOS to RUE and RUE they will and they better get used to it because they are going to be rueing for a long time. All the Republicans have to do is keep their Contract with the American People for the next 2 years and we will work to vote in a Super Majority of Reps and Senators. The Demms will know how to really rue by then.
Exactly correct.
The American people are getting pretty tired of the democrats obstructing judges for a full hearing before the senate.
Networks like Fox will air this out with both sides of the issue, CBS will be a problem until Rather leaves in March, but they must have figured it out by now that their news division is seriously biased and in need of some new viewers. I think you will see some major changes over there after Dan is gone.
The democrats still act like they have a lock on the MSM and their talking points will be verbatim communicated.
That media lock is broken and that's a good thing.
Ried is supposed to be this tough guy, He's a politician first. he will fold, if Frist didn't inherit Trent Lott disease.
Only in his mind "They don't exist".
I live in Navada and am ashamed of Harry Reid. Hopefully, my wife and myself will be moving BACK to Texas this summer.
The Democrats should be made to rue the day they started trying to apply a religious litmus test for public office.
Dumbocrats primary weapon in the Senate= the filibuster
Dumbocrats secondary weapon= sob and complain and somehow work Bush's name and his admin. into every domestic and foreign problem.
Scary Harry is full-o-hot air. The only "power" he has to fight this is public opinion, which as of 11/2/04 is most defintely going away from him.
It's not the dog barking that is going to bite you.
If you can do it then do it, stop talking, stop threatening, just carry out your threat. But unfortunately I don't think Frist has the votes to carry it out.
They'd better not. That's an empty threat if I ever heard one. Voters brought more Republicans into the Senate in the hopes that Republicans could then STOP Democrats from stalling everything. Frist is too smart not to see that. I expect Frist to deliver.
Rush is ripping the dems "crisis" to pieces.
He's citing dates, places and times when dems under Clinton said, "SS is in crisis" - most statements were made in 1998. It's hysterical!!
ah, so, the AP is as boneheaded as usual.
first, a rule change enacted through established in-house proceedure is not an "imposition"
second, the rule change is limited in scope, targeting only the use of filibuster in stalling the up-or-down vote on a candidate, having nothing to do with the proper and intended use of the filibuster in stalling godawful legislation. So, it is neither drastic, nor does it "eliminate the effectiveness of the filibuster."
Lastly, I find it so... typical of the AP to slam the "nuclear option" without turning a critical eye on the usurpation of authority (the delay tactics of the Dems) which has prompted the contemplation of the option to begin with. The Senate is to offer ADVICE on nominations, not block them.
Frist can then offer meaningful advice about how to cure their pissy attitude.
If recent history is any indicator, you are 100% correct.
There. Fixed it.
all that is required is a careful parsing of their statements, and an evaluation of the resulting cull of superfluous descriptors.
Their bias is self-evident to any who cares to look with a trained eye.
Perfect!
He does...
Loooootharrrr...of the rat people.....Loooootharrrrr
Ah, Shaddup.
