"Bush Should Just Get Out of the Car and Swim Away": KENNEDY
Sardonicity | 1/28/05 | Daniel J. Phillips

Posted on 01/28/2005 7:32:15 AM PST by BibChr

Speaking to a capacity crowd at a The French Were Right rally, Senator Ted Kennedy (D - MA) pronounced the effort in Iraq "failed," "a quagmire," "bad form," "tacky," "really embarrassing," "stubborn," "coyote ugly," "like waking up after a four-year binge — and believe you me, I know," and "just plain buck-toothed stupid."

Each of these comments was punctuated by a standing ovation by the crowd, which had already been enlivened by an arms-dropping exercise led by the opening speaker, Senator John Kerry. "You go, Teddy!" cried one attendant. Many "Kennedy/Boxer '07" signs were held aloft by people wearing "Math Is For Fundamentalists!" T-shirts.

"There's only one thing to do when you get yourself in a bind, Mr. Bush," said Kennedy. The audience craned their heads around, to see if Bush were in attendance. (He was, at the time, at his ranch in Crawford, barbecuing ribs for a group of Iraqi children liberated by American troops.)

"Just one thing to do," Kennedy thundered. "Just get out of the car, and swim away, Mr. Bush! Get out of the car! Swim away!"

These remarks were taken up by the crowd, who chanted them for the next five minutes, led by Mr. Kennedy until his face got red and he had to sit down.

A passer-by asked one of the chanters whether the irony wasn't overwhelming. (He is in the hospital, expected to make an almost full recovery.)

"'Irony'? What was he even talking about?" puzzled Francoise deBleauvier, an organizer of the meeting.

It's a joke. Parody. Satire. Or my try at it.

But admit — you weren't sure at first, were you? And that's the sad part!

Without the standard-issue "Ted in a Neck Brace" picture, its incomplete.

Even funnier when I posted it a week and a half ago. Post #18 at http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1323509/posts:

"Reaching for yet another strained metaphor, Senator Kennedy said that "This whole war on terrorism business is Georges Bush's Chappaquiddick. This President should roll down the window of the sinking Oldsmobile of Iraq, wriggle out, and swim to safety while he still has the chance. Yes, even if it means the loss of Mary Jo, or in the case of the Iraqi people 26 million Mary Jo's, he must act in such a way as to preserve his own political viability. I am confident that Americans will be just as understanding of Georges as were the local authorities of me on that fateful day lo these many years ago."

Joke or not, this is exactly what the besotted senator would do:
"Just get out of the car, and swim away, Mr. Bush! Get out of the car! Swim away!"

It's too close to reality to be a parody, especially the "Math is for Fundamentalists".

I had the phone hung up on my by a "liberal friend" in a "discussion" on reality vs "feelings" about Bush and Iraq. She posited that there was no empirical reality. I ask her what held airplanes up in the air and kept the lights and phones on. Click! At the end, she was screaming.

I've got to admit, after Kennedy's repeated talk of "waterboarding," I had this awful suspicion that this might actually be true. LOL!

Oh, that's eery! I had not read your post, or heard anyone else say that. It's just what I thought as I listened yesterday to his actual comments yesterday, that Bush should, immediately after the vote, set a timeline for withdrawal. I was surprised no one else made the connection!

Now we know at least two did!

I agree... this is very good satire... as good as anything ever seen on SNL.

It's scary, isn't it, how unself-conscious people like this are? They're living parodies of themselves, and don't even know it.

Just get out of the car and swim away?

Sounds like great advice.
I believe there's a woman in Mr. Kennedy's past could have used it.

LPC, yes you (and I'm sure a million others) had the idea, but BibChr marketed it more effectively, as has been done here. I gasped at the headline and had to click. I mean, admit it, the guy "sold" the headline. He thought enough of the idea to package it and promote it, *gasp* as its own thread!

Like an artist that thinks enough of his work to pay for a decent frame.
