Suspected Gang Member, 13, Fatally Shot By Police (after pursuit)

Los Angeles Police Department officials did not release the names of the suspect or officer involved in the shooting, which occurred shortly before 4 a.m. at West 83rd Street and South Western Avenue.

A number of other details about the case were not made public as the LAPD internal affairs unit began its investigation. Police did say that the officer fired 10 shots into the car. Deputy Chief Michael Berkow said the suspect was not armed.

The boy had refused to pull over when confronted by officers who thought they had come across a drunk driver, police said. That prompted a three-minute chase through South Los Angeles that ended when the boy drove the 1990 Toyota Camry onto a curb, police said.

Bratton said that a new policy should prohibit officers from shooting at people in vehicles "unless the officer or other person are threatened by deadly force, other than the moving vehicle."

Two officers in a patrol car first noticed the Toyota when it ran a red light on Gage Avenue and the Harbor Freeway. They also noticed that it was accelerating and decelerating erratically, and weaving from lane to lane. They followed the car onto the freeway and turned on their flashing lights and siren. When the driver kept moving, they tried warning him using their public address system.

They followed the car for more than three miles until it skidded onto the curbside at Western Avenue and 83rd Street. After the passenger jumped out of the Toyota, the driver backed into the police car. An officer fired 10 shots into the car. The news release did not indicate where the officer was when he fired the shots, but it did say the passenger door of the patrol car was open.

What these Wingnuts refuse to recognize is that a car is a 3000 pound weapon.

And this criminal will be counted as "a child killed by a gun" by the Brady Campaign/Handgun Inc. in their statistics.

I can hear this POS mother now, "But he was such a good boy. They didn't need to shoot him."

My response, What was this POS doing driving a stolen car for then. If he was such a good kid he'd be in school trying to better himself. I'm sick of listening to these idiots telling us how wrong the police were for shooting their kid. If they had disciplined their kid like they should have, the cops and court system wouldn't have to do it for them.

Wild guess ... local news reports will all show a picture of him in his 8th grade graduation cap and gown. Such a young scholar.

I can appreciate..and laugh at Barney Fife. But Barney Fife patroled some street inside Universal Studios. He didn't patrol South L.A.

FWIW-

Auto's kill more people in this country than guns and knives combined, and certainly can be used more effectively than either to kill or disable a police officer.

It's like the 14 year old slut who was with the 17 year old who shot the actress in New York.

They're all great kids in the eyes of their parents. Tells us more about the parent.

He'll be listed as a "teenage firearm-related fatality" in all of the statistics, too, no doubt.

No. A car backing toward an Officer on foot.
The kid is "bought and paid for".

Yes, about four years ago, you would be correct. There is now a counter-movement. There are companies like Calibre Press (http://www.calibrepress.com)that have " Survival Seminars'. These companies, made up largely of police officers who were disgusted when their Department would not protect them, will send an attorney if you attend one of their seminars.

I can hear this POS mother now, "But he was such a good boy. They didn't need to shoot him."

I was surprised to hear one woman saying, "Oh, it's terrible that he was killed. But, you know, what was he doing out at that time, anyway, and where were his parents?"

The really disturbing community reaction was when members of the Nation of Islam showed up.
