Madonna To Play Transvestite Candy Darling
[Friday, February 18th, 2005]Madonna is said to play transvestite Candy Darling in Untitled: Maddona Candy Darling Project, according to The Sun.
Darling starred in a series of Andy Warhol's experimental films in the 1960s. She was the inspiration behind the Velvet Underground classic Candy Says and Lou Reed's solo hit Walk On The Wild Side.
A source told the paper: "Madonna has been desperate to make a film where she can earn respect for her acting abilities.
"She is still trying to shake off the bad publicity from the movie Swept Away. She sees this as her big chance.
"She said she would do anything for the part and has agreed to work for free."

Sheena Easton more talented than Madonna? Are you kidding?
I can not stand Madonna's politics but Madonna is waaaay more talented.
She trained as a classical dancer at the University of Michigan then moved to NYC where she developed her music career.
She has always been a part of writing and producing her own music and she always used music to convey a social message(even though as a conservative I did not usually agree with the message). She did that with songs like "poppa don't preach".
She is an icon and a living legend.
If any of you guys have teenage daughters do not know who Madonna is then I guess your daughters never heard of people like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. They have both worked with Madonna and often site her as one of their biggest influences.

There was also a song called "Candy" by Iggy Pop and one of the chicks from the B-52s.
I wonder if this freak Candy Darling was the inspiration for that song too.
It is so funny that some weirdo with a mental illness is a muse for so many artists who worked in the 70s.
I guess anything Warhol is considered "too cool for school."

Wasn't this movie already made? It was called "I Shot Andy Warhol", I believe.
Maybe Madonna could play Carol in the next Brady Bunch movie. I'm sure a lot of accolades would follow.

So shes going to pretend to be a man pretending to be a woman? Really, I think this role was _made_ for Michael Jackson and could be just the thing to spark his troubled career.

Maybe this explains the Che beanie she wears all the time now. She knows what gods she has to do homage to to gain acting respect. The public is another matter.

She sees this as her big chance. Will she be graspimg for that next "big chance" when she's in her 60's? Unfortunately so, it seems.

Only Madonna thinks she HAS acting abilities.
As far as her playing a guy playing a girl she's a natural.

And she was brilliant in all of her other past roles! She wasn't bad in Dick Tracy. It wasn't high art but it whiled away a couple of hours pleasantly enough.

Yep, I was thinking of that new rule that only Indians can play Indians in movies.
Shouldn't be too hard to find a drag queen who's already playing Madonna.

Yes, her voice is real, she doesn't need digital editing to make it sound better. Madonna was ticked off when Sheena got to do the 'For Your Eyes Only' soundtrack. Sheena got into contract troubles and kid of disappeared for a while, she had a better voice and 10 times as much class as Madonna will ever have.

I think you are right.
I SHOT ANDY WARHOL
*** 1/2
Starring Lili Taylor, Jared Harris, Martha Plimpton and Stephen Dorff. Directed by Mary Harron. Written by Mary Harron and Daniel Minahan. Produced by Tom Kalin and Christine Vachon. A Samuel Goldwyn release. Drama. Not yet rated. Running time: 100 min.
When she shot Andy Warhol and art dealer Mario Amayo in 1968, Valerie Solanas quite literally jumped the gun on Warhol's prophecy that in the future everyone would be famous for 15 minutes.
As played to realistic perfection by Lili Taylor right down to the dirt under her fingernails, Solanas is an eerie combination of sexual sophistication, intellectual wit and professional naivet. Now known for her "S.C.U.M. (Society for Cutting Up Men) Manifesto," Solanas was then a fringe player in Warhol's art and experimental film factory. A ruthless self-promoter and a morass of man-hating paranoia, Solanas was desperate that Warhol produce a play she had written. Fed up with frustration after several fruitless attempts to get his attention, Solanas attacked him at point-blank range. Though he lived another two decades, he never fully recovered.
Taylor's forceful, empathetic presence makes Valerie much less hateful than she might have been if played by another actress. As her transvestite friend Candy Darling, Stephen Dorff shows appealing range and looks surprisingly good in heels. And Jared Harris plays Warhol with a passive air that occasionally gives way to a jumpy, frightened rabbit quality.
Thanks to Mary Harron and Daniel Minahan's exhaustive research, the New York City of "I Shot Andy Warhol" has an authentic undercurrent that shows in Therese Deprez's grittily accurate production design. In one standout party scene, Harron and Deprez masterfully recreate the decadence, androgyny and anything-goes atmosphere of Warhol's Factory. Appropriately given the Warhol scene's fascination with "underground" cinema, director of photography Ellen Kuras recaptures the essence of experimental cinematography, at times using Godard-esque jump cuts and strikingly juxtaposed film stocks.
Though it drags in the middle and could stand to lose a few minutes off its running time, "I Shot Andy Warhol" is a compelling movie. Neither justifying nor glorifying Solanas' infamous act, "I Shot Andy Warhol" gives this historical footnote her own chapter. -L.L
