If you've never had the pleasure of being at sea level when a US warship is in your near proximity, you can't imagine the intimidation they impose.

My pleasures were at weather deck level of a DE, DD, and AKA; except when looking at the big gray wall from the coxain's position of an LCVP or an LCM at age 14 - 16 as a Navy League Sea Cadet.

That's why it was sad to see the Iowa Class battleships retired. Nothing is as intimidating as the silhouette of one of those battlewagons.

Been there, experienced that -- but was NOT intimidated..
In fact -- supremely grateful and appreciative...
I guess it all depends on who you are, and whose ships they are- Huh?

Walking around on the flight deck, or seeing the size of the hanger deck was quite an experience.
Then I saw a display that showed a pair of models. They were a model of the Intrepid sitting on the flight deck of a model Nimitz class carrier! I don't think that I could really imagine something THAT BIG!

I remember being in Guam (Polaris Point) when the U.S.S. Enterprise arrived. They were going to try to bring her in to Apra harbor there, but couldn't because her draft was too great.
A few months later, the Tripoli (an LHA) came to visit us and was able to tie up to the Naval station on the other side of the harbor from us. That thing was absolutely huge. And yet, she was dwarfed by the big E.
Indeed I can see how these things can easily intimidate an enemy.
