Justice to molester, Lohardaga women-style
The Statesman (India) ^ | Feb. 24

RANCHI, Feb. 24. — A 50-year-old man from a village in Senha block of Lohardaga district was dragged out of his house by more than 40 women, tonsured and paraded naked for over three hours last evening, days after he allegedly tried to rape an 18-year-old from a nearby village.

Around 6 p.m. yesterday the women of Kandra village dragged Veer Singh Lohra, a resident of Booti Dugertoli village, out of his house and then beat him up. A barber was called in and his head shaven, the police said, before he was marched through three villages without his clothes.

An FIR was lodged by Lohra’s wife against 30 women with the Senha police station this morning. Not a single person was allowed out of the village during the three hours of Lohra’s “punishment”. Women of the village refused to let police enter the area to broker truce. Lohra, a father of seven children, has a history of sexual misdemeanour. A rape case was lodged against him six months ago, which was later withdrawn.

The act of retribution was prompted by an incident on 16 February. Police sources said, Lohra had barged into the girl’s house and tried to rape her. The teenager’s shrieks brought villagers to her door. Lohra fled, threatening the girl with dire consequences if she disclosed his name. An official of the Senha police station said, “The girl was too afraid to tell us the name. After a lot of assurances, the girl disclosed the name. After that, the women took over.”

“According to the complaint lodged by his wife, Lohra was dragged out of the house and then beaten up by sticks and slippers. A barber then shaved his head, eyebrows and moustache. No one from the village was allowed to leave the village all that while,” police officials said. “Till 10 p.m. last night, Lohra was subject to regular beatings by the women. He was then left unconscious,” said the officials.

The police is facing difficulties in investigations. “We do find it difficult to enter the village. The women are keeping a guard and they do not want police to enter the area. Lohra is a known molester. Around six months ago, an FIR was lodged by a middle-aged woman alleging him of raping her. The matter is being investigated,” said a Senha police station official.

Vigilante justice India style. Bet that'll learn him.

I sure hope they frog-marched, shaved, beat and left unconscious the right guy.

If all went well with this instant justice we wont being seeing any photos of it on the internet.... if so, Rumsfeld would have a lot of explaining to do.

Our inner city neighborhoods would do well to administer this same thoughtful approach to self-policing themselves. Crime would all but vanish overnight.

I think these women acted in a perfectly measured way. No castrating, but he was shaved to show his crime. Being naked was different when he was the "victim." The regular beatings were succinct and should have gotten his attention. Will be interesting to see the next step if he refuses to change.

"The matter is being investigated". No wonder these women took the law into their own hands.

OK, at what point did this story veer into a Robert Mapplethorpe thing?

Reminds me of the vigilantes in Mexico city that killed the two policemen by mistake. Thank God we live in a country where the rule of law prevails, not mob justice. Of course, mob justice is what you get when the rule of law fails.

It's good for ol' Veer that they didn't "shave" any other things off, otherwise he would be Singh Highra instead...
