Dearborn man pleas guilty to aiding terror group

DETROIT (AP) — A Dearborn man has pleaded guilty to conspiring to provide material support to a terrorist group.

According to federal prosecutors, Mahmoud Youssef Kourani, 33, hosted meetings in his home in late 2002 where a guest speaker from Lebanon solicited donations for Hezbollah, which has been designated by the United States as a terrorist organization.

The government didn't identify the speaker at the meetings. It said the money was intended for Hezbollah's orphans of martyrs program to benefit the families of those killed in Hezbollah operations or by the group's enemies, the Detroit Free Press reported in a Wednesday story.

Under the plea agreement worked out by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth Chadwell and Kourani's attorney, William Swor, Kourani faces no more than five years in prison, The Detroit News reported.

Under the original charge, Kourani faced up to 15 years. Sentencing is scheduled for June 14.

Both Chadwell and Swor declined comment.

When Kourani was indicted in November 2003, prosecutors said he was a member, fighter, recruiter and fund-raiser for Hezbollah and continued his fund-raising activities in the United States after entering the country illegally from Mexico in 2001.

The government said his brother was the group's chief of military security in southern Lebanon.

Kourani has been in custody since May 2003, when federal agents searched his Dearborn home and charged him with harboring an illegal immigrant.

Kourani pleaded guilty, served six months in a federal prison and was awaiting deportation in an immigration facility when he was indicted in 2004 on the terror charge.

I wonder in what part of 2001 he came in illegally.

He came illegally and harboured another illegal.

He aids terrorists.

And we're letting him out when?!!!

"after entering the country illegally from Mexico in 2001"

Well, there you are... Middle Eastern terrorists coming across the Mexican borders... about to be amnestied in so they could do their nefarious work in the light of day.
