Thoughts on Joining the Army or the Navy/Marines

I've been offered admission into West Point and the Naval Academy (class of '09.) I'm leaning towards West Point because I would like to serve in a hard-core, rapidly deployed, infantry/special forces unit. My understanding is that the Army controls the majority of the special forces. Any info would be appreciated.

I would like to serve in a hard-core, rapidly deployed, infantry/special forces unit. They're all wusses compared to Navy Seals.

Congratulations, you are obviously talented and accomplished, best of luck with your endeavor. Having said that go to The Naval Academy and be a United States Marine.

If you want to be all you can be then The Navy Seals is the way to go...

Go Navy and take the Marine option. Marines are always on the front line and if you really want to get down and dirty you can become a Force Recon Marine...

Son in law's a Marine. I think I missed out, not joining when I was a kid. Could've actually done something meaningful with my 20's.
There's something very special, and uniquely American, about the Corps. The way you talk, you might find that as well.

Any way you go you will be a winner. Which sounds more cool, Hoo-ah or Hoo-rah?
Congrats! Stay Fierce!

If you like diving, swimming, and don't get sea-sick, go for the Navy Seals or Marines' forward Recon units. If you prefer more dry land stuff, go for the Army - Airborne Ranger, Special Forces, etc.
And congratulations!

You've got a misperception of modern combat, then. A lot of things that special forces used to do is being farmed out to "non-elite" forces, simply because the nature of our current wars. "Regular" infantry forces, as well as Marines, as just as likely to be crawling through caves in Afghanistan as the special forces now.
West Point is a fine school, and you can't go wrong by choosing the Army. But a Marine or a Seal is going to see just as much hard core combat as anyone in the Army.

I'm AF but if I were you and from what I have seen...if you want to go anything, and I deal with all services. I like the camaraderie of the Marines....they take care of themselves .........

I would like to serve in a hard-core, rapidly deployed, infantry/special forces unit. You've seen too many Hollywood movies. Everyone knows the hardest-core are in the Navy. Congratulations on your future appointment. Besides the Annapolis nightlife is a whole lot better than what's at West Point.

Good luck in whichever you choose, but you will get a good education, and a great opportunity to serve and take a look at the military as a possible career if you choose that path downstream. What you end up doing will depend on your performance in school and what is available and happening when you graduate.
Those that approach it intending to have a good learing and working relationship with the military, usually do very well and personally benefit from it. I know, I did. The choice must be yours though.

SOF is never a given, no matter what you've been told. Choose the academy that will give you the best education.
